Family Coat of Arms 'Stuff'

Hoping someone can help.
My dad has asked for a badge with the coat of arms for his family name. I've tried searching but it's brings up so much stuff but I can never find the name.
It's an Irish surname and I bought him a coaster from Dublin a while back and obviously he wants to build up how collection Grin
Could anyone point me in the right direction, I'd be very grateful!

Ah, I don’t think all families have a coat of arms. I suspect the coaster you bought in Dublin was a touristy thing, rather than a genuine coat of arms. Sorry.

DurhamDurham · 26/11/2019 21:54

Hi I'm sure this is genuine, well I'm hoping so. I've done some homework on the name, I'll change my name after this so it doesn't matter if I reveal it, it's Murtagh and there does appear to be a genuine crest but I just can't find the badge I'm looking for Smile

I saw the same crest in the shops I went into Dublin so I should have bought my dad all the merchandise then! Grin

www.heraldryandcrests.com/pages/name-search

Try here, I’ve checked my maiden name, married name and my grandads name and there was 3 different heraldry crests that came up, with explanations about how the name came about.

I ordered 2 quite a few years ago and framed them, no idea where they are now though.

Sorry DurhamDurham but you need to read here. Coats of arms belong to individuals not families:

Try www.hallofnames.org.uk/

I've got two framed coat of arms with origin of my name from them - one maiden name and one married name.

eBay. Honestly brilliant. You can get wax seals, necklaces.. all-sorts! I got a certificate from eBay with our family name and an explanation of it's origins off there. Hung proudly in our hallway.

We also went to Dublin and got a coaster and now we try and get things for each other for important anniversaries and things.

Try searching for coat of arms or family crest.

JasperRising · 26/11/2019 22:15

It's not a proper coat of arms in the sense of the Duke of wherever having his coat of arms but these 'family crests' on a bunch of merchandise things have been a popular gimmick for years now. If DurhamDurham's dad likes that kind of thing then there's no harm in getting him some more.

Good luck in your hunt!

DurhamDurham · 26/11/2019 22:33

I mean I could tell my dad it's all a bit of a con. Or I could just get him what he wants and make him happy Grin

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction everyone, much appreciated as always.

If you can get a picture of the coat of arms from the Internet you could use one of the online companies that prints your photo onto mugs, calendars, canvases etc to make him the coat of arms stuff he is looking for.

Good luck on your hunt.

And yes I would just give him what he has asked for. Not worry about historical accuracy.

DurhamDurham · 27/11/2019 16:39

That's a great idea, thank you!
