Glasses how can it be this difficult - teens

DD is -5.50 so she cannot function without glasses. She doesn't want lenses. She's 12, non sporty and just wants to be normal.

There is not one pair of glasses in our large specsavers that fit her nose bridge. Her current glasses are 51-13-140. She hates the glasses with the little nose pieces and won't have them. She has new frames every six months pretty much.
The fight to find frames to fit her is getting worse and worse.

Not one pair. I'm so frustrated.

Does anyone know some helpful stuff for me. OR can you go whip the glasses off your teen girls faces and tell me the size and if it matches, where you got them from ?

We have the same issue and found Vision Express was much better. They had a wider range of petite adult sizes which worked.

woogal · 26/11/2019 18:11

Glasses direct is great. Bigger range

dungtwicebother · 26/11/2019 18:25

I get mine from there but she needs the arms adjusting as she's petite and they won't prescribe for children

I left Vision Express for the same reason plus their level of care plummeted to despondent levels. They actually gave me £100 as an apology for bad service last year

Hiya, Dispensing optician here. Try a decent local independent opticians and always ask to see the dispensing optician. They will have access to a much wider range of frames than the multiples as they will not be dictated to by a head office.
I often have to order different sizes and colours for patients of all ages and can order from most suppliers!
I cannot abide poorly fitted frames on kids (or any adult for that matter!) there will be a frame out there for your DD so don't give up hope 🤞🏻

I have quite a narrow face and couldn't find a thing in Specsavers. Asda Opticians had a much better range of narrow glasses and were cheap too. I couldn't afford the thinned lenses at an independent unfortunately. Customer service was a bit meh but I got the perfect specs so I can live with it!

underneaththeash · 26/11/2019 22:08

Specasvers only have children's frames in limited sizes. As the PP said, you need a large independent with a proper dispensing option that can advise.

dementedpixie · 26/11/2019 22:11

We use a local independent optician

dungtwicebother · 26/11/2019 22:44

I will try an independent but when I add in ultra thin lenses the price spirals and spirals.... I know they are good but they aren't competitive sadly.

Would an independent reglaze her previous frames which she had for 6 months?

Asda a good tip. Will see where our nearest one is

An independent would certainly reglaze a 6 month old frame and would more than likely have reduced cost lenses for kids, I know we do 👓

No advice but sympathy here. I also have -5.50 and a very slim nose bridge (same size as her - as an adult) so I totally feel your pain!
I have essentially got used to them sitting a bit low but hate it so will be watching for good advice on this thread (of which there's already been some, thanks!)

purpleme12 · 27/11/2019 10:59

I have a teenage/child size face (narrow).
I get the child/teenage glasses. This makes it very hard though because there was actually about 1 or 2 I find that I like that fit me and look good. But unfortunately it really is just a case of going to each opticians and having a look and trying.
I found 2 shops in the end and they each had 2 glasses in that fit me. (Boots and vision express)
In my case the independent one was one of the worst for what they had in.
So I would recommend them necessarily. I'd just unfortunately just keep looking everywhere you can

mencken · 27/11/2019 11:39

just to check - are you looking on the bloke side too? Anything specifically designed for females is overpriced and crap, and that's especially the case with specs frames. Ghastly pink, fussy Edna Everage sparkles, name of some tax-dodging fashion icon on them...

the little nose pieces are indeed a pain, get mucky really quickly and break off. Hopefully she can find some one-piece practical frames somewhere.
