So am going to buy DD (11) a KIndle for her Christmas present.

The Kindle Fire is on sale for £29.99 and that seems great. But is it rubbish or will DD be able to read books on it, does she need a membership or something to do that, and if so, how much is that?

I have never had a kindle before although I do have Prime. Dont want to buy this as her main present and it's rubbish or she cant use it without loads more money being spent.

What I do with my Kindle books (and those ds asks for) is to put them on a shopping list on Amazon and then look at it regularly to see if the price drops - things come up really frequently on 99p for the day. I also do KindofBook for the daily deal monitoring

Basic kindle now seems to have a light.

You need to register the second kindle to your account, so any books you have will be available on it. There are parental controls to prevent anyone ordering things on your account.

I have a Fire tablet. It goes everywhere with me. I download a lot of ebooks from my local library as well as buying off Amazon.Your local library website will explain it. I also use it for games and internet browsing, also store some favourite photos on it.

Downside of the Fire is that can't be used in the sun. Kindle ereader can be used out of doors, but can't do internet, library books, games, etc.

I have bought my dd a Kobo as that works with library books in our area Smile. I now want one for myself.

You can set up a child account from your main account so you can choose which books are available from your collection to the child's kindle. I have 3 kids on one account all with different books then as they get older I switch the books around. Most of the classics are available free - and lots of series e.g. Nancy drew are 99p for the set.. Also if you buy the kindle version of a book on Amazon you can often add the audio book version for less than the cost of just buying the audio book!

Thank you! (Risers was supposed to be rosere!)

You know what I really wish Amazon would do is to give you a free Kindle version of every physical book you buy. [sigh]
It would make my life complete Grin

You can share books or you could put both kindle on your account then download books for your daughter to use. But you'd lose parental control on her device unless you blocked it to the internet after downloading her latest choice. Or downloaded to your computer then transferred the book via data cable to kindle.
It plays games, kindle unlimited is okay I read a lot up to 20 books a week so for me kindle unlimited is a steal at 7.99.
If you dont block the kindle via parental controls it can be used to shop on amazon and other web sites online so be wary.
Plus it reads to you does the kindle fire which is great if you like being read to as you drift off to sleep.
The kindles made purely for reading are much better than the ones which are a tablet the fire 7 and onwards are very difficult to read /play games /search web etc outdoors in the sun.
You can use kindle app on an android phone free to read books. It has all features of app on kindle machine it just doesn't read to you.
Now all that said I've lost my kindle 7 so I'm going to buy a new one this week.
I miss being read to as I work.

I have 3 kindle fires of different sizes and a paperweight. I love my kindle fires. I use them for reading, apps and going on line. I only started using my paperweight again because I do find i can get more distracted with the fire, jumping from reading to mumsnet!. But out of the 2 I prefer the fire. You can also get special promotions with unlimited, so you might get a month for free a few times a year. I just got 3 months unlimited free today, just make sure to cancel it before the promotion period ends.

If you tend to buy books new, kindle books will save you money.

If you buy a lot second hand, you'll find it more expensive.

Defo get the paperwhite or original. Don't get any version of the fire.

CaptainMyCaptain · 26/11/2019 18:57

I love my kindle paperwhite and can read it on holiday in the sun whereas my husband, with his kindle fire, finds the glare too much. I look at the kindle daily deals and usually get books for 99p or a couple of pounds.

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 26/11/2019 19:23

I hated my kindle fire and ditched it for a paperwhite. I found the fire heavy to hold with one hand (in bed reading) and I was really distracted by all the apps. I’d say a paper white is better for reading.

Italia2005 · 26/11/2019 21:25

Yes you can share kindle books - My amazon account has 3 other kindles (users) linked to it - only downside is I have to pay for any books and get reimbursed, but huge advantage is sharing books without us all paying individually, it’s just one purchase per book.

NannyR · 26/11/2019 21:42

I have a kindle fire and a kindle paperwhite and the kindle app on my phone. I only use the fire for internet browsing, email, Facebook etc. I much prefer the paperwhite for reading, the screen is much nicer to read on and because it's just books, there's less chance of getting distracted by checking emails etc.

Ludways · 26/11/2019 23:16

I recently signed up for the Kindle Unlimited, at the end of my free month I went to cancel and they gave me a further 3 months for £7.99, so I've had 4 months for the price of 1. I love s bargain!

Likethebattle · 27/11/2019 08:26

@fluffnstuff93 you can use a tablet in the sun, the trick for tablets and phones is turn the brightness up high and you can then see in bright sunlight.

CaptainMyCaptain · 27/11/2019 08:58

The paperwhite is also better for reading in bed as it doesn't have the harsh backlight of a tablet.

Jins · 27/11/2019 09:05

The kindle kids edition is on amazon for £59.99 at the moment and it includes a year’s unlimited kids subscription. Worth a look

SoupDragon · 27/11/2019 09:13

I agree with everyone that says, for reading books, a Kindle with a light is far better than the Fire.

TravellingSpoon · 27/11/2019 09:16

Thanks everyone. I cant really stretch to the kids kindle so will leave the cheaper one if its not suitable.
