it's "teal" and it's £150 cheaper than the black one....

Put men's bike into Google images, then put women's bike into Google images. Look at the change in colour/ tones overall. That's the point I'm making, not whether it's right or wrong for an individ

LemonGingerCakes · 26/11/2019 15:22

Individual

somebrightmorning · 26/11/2019 15:30

It's a surprise (that's what he wanted - a surprise).

The bike is £945 but the shop local to me can get the teal for £800 which is the very top of what we're prepared to pay.

RedPandaFluff - thanks for your encouraging comments about the colour! That's what I meant when I said his friends tend to wear either a tshirt or a pair of shorts in a bright colour. Re suspension, a few different people have said it's better to have a top of the range "hardtail" than a bottom of the range "full sus".

I did text a couple of his friends' parents to find out what their kids had but the answers utterly astonished me (bikes between £2k and £4k!).

They are both £950?

keepingbees · 26/11/2019 15:39

I like it but my son probably wouldn't to be honest. I know it's a surprise but I would do some digging, I wouldn't want to risk it on something so expensive.

Northee · 26/11/2019 15:40

The colour is fine, I really like it, but I really hate the huge brand name in an ugly font covering the frame. But as it's for your son, I'm sure he will love it as it's the done thing to advertise brands and have everything on show these days Grin

Anyone who buys it in black so they don't feminise their son is a complete and utter twat and they deserve to get ripped off by £150. Wink

Tonz · 26/11/2019 15:43

It’s absolutely fine for a boy. Showed my 12 year old nephew who is very much a boys boy and he said he’d be happy with it

flipperdoda · 26/11/2019 15:44

I definitely agree with this.

PP are correct too about mountain biking being big on bold colours. Does he mountain bike already? What's his general preference on clothes colours etc? No good if his friends like bold colours but he doesn't!

The boys I were friends with in my teens who liked mountain biking would have gone for it definitely. Also once it gets a bit muddy it won't be so block colour-y!

changeforprivacy · 26/11/2019 15:51

Sorry ignore me I missed the bit about local shop selling it cheaper

RedPandaFluff · 26/11/2019 15:56

Agree with the general principle of a good hardtail being better than a lower-end full-sus, but I reckon the Bossnut is the exception to this - the spec is so, so good for the money; I think it won some awards as well.

Be warned, @somebrightmorning - DH maintains that the ideal number of mountain bikes to own is n+1 (n being current number of bikes) . . . this could be just the beginning 😄

Anyone who buys it in any colour other than the recipients preference to make a point is a twat. Especially when the recipient is a teenager.

Blibbyblobby · 26/11/2019 16:04

That colour is a rip off / homage of Bianchi Celeste, the signature colour of a famous Italian manufacturer. Loads of road bikes in that colour ridden by all genders.

Blibbyblobby · 26/11/2019 16:04

(Although I would still double check with the recipient)

CMOTDibbler · 26/11/2019 16:54

I totally agree on a good hardtail. FWIW, my ds has a Trek Marlin 7 which is working really well for him and scores very highly on tests and is cheaper

Ah well that's his 18th or 21st sorted then....:)

That's good to know CMOT. I cannot tell you how many tabs I have open at the moment looking at different bikes, definitely going for a hardtail. So excited for somebright's son and his beautiful one all sorted.
