Can anyone answer a random question about egg sizes since WW2?

I was using one of my granny's recipes and it calls for 5 eggs, which I really struggled to get into the mixture without splitting. Then I realised I was using large eggs and the ones my granny used were probably smaller.

She's 94 now and I can't ask her as she's not well at the minute so I was wondering if anyone knew if the typical size of eggs has changed? I'm just curious.

Why not just buy smaller ones then? Confused

Yeah! Eggs are bigger now.
If you're making a sponge cake, weigh the eggs and use the same weight of all other ingredients.

I have loads of recipes from my late gran and learned this a similar way to you.

Interesting question

My guess would be smaller and more tasty

I have a family member with hens now I come to think of it. The shells are harder than supermarket ones, yolks are yellower, tastier. I'd say they are medium shop size.

Well, yes, GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat or use less eggs which I did do...

But I was curious which is why I'm asking

Eggs come in different sizes? You can buy large or small? So I suspect in the old days they just had smaller ones as standard

I’m sure delia has mentioned this in one of her books 😂

Thanks PlatinumBrunette and Fraggling, that's the kind of info I'm after.

It's a pale fruit cake so weighing probably wouldn't work but it might be interesting to compare them the next time.

You could get some from farm shop of farm with smaller free range flock if you have one near you for full effect!

Ooh, good idea! I've plenty of fruit left so I could do a taste test too!
