Keeping Son Warm in Winter

My DS (10) was freezing last week. He asked me if there was anything he could wear under his jeans to keep his legs warm. He doesn't like leggings/under armor as they bunch up with his socks. My DD (12) told him that socks that go over his knees or thick tights could do the trick. He wants to give both long socks and tights a try. I've looked and have not been able to find any socks that go over his knees. Any ideas? And would tights be okay to wear under his jeans/shorts? What has worked for your DS?

Would football socks go over his knees?

Is this for school uniform?
Thermal shoe insoles are good. Stops the cold creeping in. I've got some from Poundland.

Warm head will help as you lose a lot of heat from there. Also warm torso so a thermal vest or top as first layer-merino base layers are good but expensive. If he’s happy to wear tights what about thermals or long johns? Same fabric and with socks over them they shouldn’t ride up.

@megletthesecond It's for school and for home. His feet he says are fine, just his legs.

@BethanyGilbert the ones he has go up to his knees. I can look for for football socks that are a size or two larger. Then they might go way over his knees and help him. Do you think plain women's over the knee socks would help?

Decathlon have loads of good thermal options quite cheaply. Maybe have a look and see. They come up small so might be worth sizing up.

GlamGiraffe · 26/11/2019 23:12

Woolly tights? My son used to wear them. He loved that they kept him warm. Lots of trousers are really flimsy.

aidjga · 26/11/2019 23:13

@Sunshinegirl82 those thermal tights look like they would work great under his jeans or shorts! I'll ask him if he'd want those!

You may need to go up a shoe size if you buy thicker socks.

DS wears base layers like these from Decathlon which just come to your knees for skiing - he wears ski socks but gets too hot with long johns under them - hence the Capri length tights

However if your DS is happy to wear tights then just go with that. They pretty much look like thermal leggings anyway just removes the bunching issue

aidjga · 26/11/2019 23:15

@GlamGiraffe do you recommend any woolly tights? My DD has a lot of thinner ones.

Girls over the knee socks from amazon have a little bit of rubber at the top to stop slipping down. But sport skins worn over the socks shouldn't bunch up. It's part of our school's sports kit for winter.

Tights will keep warm. You can get cotton ones from places like John Lewis or M&S but some of the European brands also do woollen ones. Just google it online.

Aldi are selling fleece-lined women's tights atm. Dd (10yrs and slim) is wearing the small and they're perfect.

Also, for home, Gap have super thick sherpa lined jogging bottoms. Couldn't be cosier.

AaandBreathe · 27/11/2019 05:14

How thick are the soles of his shoes? As that makes a huge difference when it's cold.
A thick-soled pair of waterproof shoes and a thick-sold pair e.g. of crocs for home.

Alpine hiking socks are really thick and comfy, but you'd probably need to go up a level or proper old fashioned woolen hiking socks would be knee length.

For under layers, look for some thermal ski wear. They're usually elasticated around the ankle and my DC have never complained that they rise up. You do need to teach them how to put their socks on over them properly though.
