Teachers, how many hours do you work per day?

I work .6 so the equivalent of 3 days. As a part timer, there is always a tendency to fill the time. I am trying to do 3 days in 27 hours per week. It's so hard! I still have so much to do and could quite easily work 35 hours plus.
On 27 hours, my salary works out at £16 per hour.
So is 9 hours a day a reasonable target?
Please can you tell me how many days you do and how many hours on average you do per day?

Job share in Ireland
9.00-2.40 for 3 days one week and 2 days then next. So 12.5 hours pay per week.
I arrive anytime between 8.20 -8.45
I leave at 3.15/3.30
All staff are gone by 4 and school is locked by 4.30.
I don’t take work home.

Ireland you say? Can I transfer my teaching qualification to Ireland?
When can I move?

Lipperfromchipper · 26/11/2019 23:17

@Flamingo yes;
There are two requirements to teach in Ireland for primary and they are

  1. you will need to complete your Irish language training
  2. You might need a religious certification to teach in catholic schools (which the majority are)
For secondary I think it’s the same as U.K....no Irish required (unless you are teaching Irish obvs)
FlamingoAndJohn · 27/11/2019 19:26

Bugger. I don’t speak one word of Irish and I have no faith.

I also only have QTS and not a PGCE.

NCTDN · 27/11/2019 21:55

@Lipperfromchipper we're all v jealous!

NCTDN · 27/11/2019 21:56

@FlamingoAndJohn why would you need a pgce target than qts?

NCTDN · 27/11/2019 21:56

Rather not targetBlush

FlamingoAndJohn · 27/11/2019 23:08

Well normally people have a PCGE as well as QTS.
Having QTS only means I can only teach in England as far as I know.

Shalom23 · 27/11/2019 23:16

In Ireland too. 8.30 to 3.30. When teaching in UK I did 8 to 6 then again at the weekends. You don't need Irish or religion for secondary. It's been a life transformer too moving here. Am mortified when I think of all the useless shite I had to do in UK.

BackforGood · 27/11/2019 23:17

27 hours seems very optimistic for a 0.6 contract.

When I was in school (Primary) I would stop when I got to 36 hours over a week when I worked 0.6. It seemed proportional to a 60 hr FT week.

Lipperfromchipper · 27/11/2019 23:40

Full time hours in primary here in Ireland are 25!! 🙈

DrMadelineMaxwell · 29/11/2019 21:41

How are they spread out through the week, Lipper?

rosy71 · 29/11/2019 21:46

8.30 - 5.30 5 days a week. Monday - Wednesday, I do an hour or 2 in the evenings too, then i get too tired. A couple of hours on Sunday usually as well. About 50ish hours a week.

Lipperfromchipper · 29/11/2019 22:09

@DrMadelineMaxwell 9.00-2.40. We take 40 mins breaks in a day (10min break, 30min lunch) and we are technically not paid for those (but we take them...I have never known a teacher here to work through their lunch unless it’s their turn for duty) so 5 hours contact time...25 hours.

mmgirish · 29/11/2019 22:18

I'm at school from 7 - 5 usually each day. I work about 5 - 8 hours at home a week too.

mmgirish · 29/11/2019 22:18

I often work through break/lunch too.

itssquidstella · 29/11/2019 22:19

I'm in school by 8, leave at around 5.30. I do go to lunch so take around 45 minutes as a break but work about 9 hours a day, with on average one late night a fortnight (so in school till 8ish).

I don't take much home though, and rarely work at the weekends. I check my emails more than I should though - I find it difficult to switch off.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 29/11/2019 22:45

Jealous of the hours in Ireland. My school (primary) day runs from 8.55 to 3.15 with 50 mins for dinner and 15 mins break time.
