WTF do I do with this?

My DH’s very elderly Aunt passed away not long ago and bequeathed me a fur coat in her will. It said because I like quirky fashion stuff that’s why it came to me.

I wasn’t able to give it straight back as it was sent to me and I was afraid of upsetting DH and his family if I refused to accept it as they were all so distraught.

I obviously can’t keep it but what on Earth do I do with it? It’s about 90 years old, I’ve no idea what animal fur has been used. I can’t sell it obviously (nor would I want to!!!) but would a charity shop accept it?

Please don’t bash me for this, I never asked for it and I don’t want it but I want to get it out of my house in a way that doesn’t upset my bloody in laws.

It's just an old fur coat. You didn't kill the animals yourself. I think you're making a bit too much of this. Just pack it up and store it in the loft in case your in-laws want to see/use it someday.

I inherited a fur jacket and gave it to a local charity shop but you can send it to PETA which is a charity that works for the ethical treatment of animals www.peta.org.uk/action/donate-fur-peta/

Donate to a zoo for one of their endangered animals talks they give

PlatinumBrunette · 24/11/2019 19:26

Sell it. There's a surprising market out there for vintage fur www.thevintagehq.com/fur-and-furrier

YeOldeTrout · 24/11/2019 19:27

Would you post a pic, OP?
I'd sell it on Ebay. Donate all proceeds to an animal right charity if you think that would be good cause to support.

Fluffycloudland77 · 24/11/2019 19:35

I was going to suggest making it into a pet bed too. Would a museum be interested in it?.

simplekindoflife · 24/11/2019 19:38

I'd sell it and donate the proceeds to an animal charity.

Crunchymum · 24/11/2019 19:39

The PETA idea is fab

DisgruntledGuineaPig · 24/11/2019 19:52

Many charity shops dont sell fur so would just have to bin it. Dont donate to a charity shop without researching their policy first.

I would suggest donating to a theatre or drama group.

Or Ebay/sell on via a vintage sale. You could donate the money to an animal charity if that would feel better.

If it was fake fur, would you wear the style?

notthenormal · 24/11/2019 19:54

Wear it, it will be a warm coat, the animals have been dead for years, your virtue signalling now won't help them

WelcomeToGreenvale · 24/11/2019 19:55

Don't support PETA. Vile corporation.

Sell the coat, donate it, put it into storage. It's basically an antique. No one will judge whatever you do.

Paythosebitchesnomind269 · 24/11/2019 19:57

Give it to an animal sanctuary it will help settle the rescues

Dilkhush · 24/11/2019 19:59

Some fur coats can be sold legally, but not all.
A charity shop won't want it.
I inherited a load of fur coats in the 1990s. Didn't quite know what to do with them. I took them all to a poor and rough Eastern European county with freezing winters and donated them to the local Red Cross. I wore the full length mink coat while I was there and grew to fully appreciate the value of fur in a cold climate.
These days I think I'd find a way to donate them to Syrian refugees in Jordan.

Kanga83 · 24/11/2019 19:59

Some animal sanctuaries accept them for orphaned animals- it gives them comfort. There's also a charity where you can send them to over seas places that are freezing cold where skins and furs are the norm, the idea being the pelts can be used instead of needing to kill more. I can't remember what the charity is called but that's what I did around 4 years ago with the ones I inherited.

TrixyaMattelodchikova · 24/11/2019 20:00

Some great ideas Thankyou! I don’t really want to donate to PETA as I’m aware of the negative aspects of that organisation. I will contact my local animal shelter first to see if it would suit them.

If not I will sell it and donate the money to an animal based charity.

It’s too small for me and I’m not virtual signalling at all, I don’t agree with fur and don’t want to keep it.

OP posts:
IDrinkAndISewThings · 24/11/2019 20:07

I was going to suggest gifting it to a drama / theatre group, especially if Aunt was a fan of the stage?
Otherwise if animal sanctuaries accept them I think that's a lovely idea

DisgruntledGuineaPig · 24/11/2019 20:28

Do your local university/college do textiles/fashion history type courses? They might be able to put it to good use.

I think it should be used in some way. I would contact theatres.

Dont let it go to waste/bin.

GunpowderGelatine · 24/11/2019 21:34

Will probably get bashed for this but I'd honestly just wear it

onthecoins · 24/11/2019 21:41

I'd stick it in the loft for a bit til everyone has forgotten about it then sell it and donate the proceeds.

Katinski · 24/11/2019 21:46

I'm not bashing you, GG.Smile I was gifted a silver fox jacket in someone's will, and when it was really cold I really appreciated it. Lightweight, smart, and so,so warm.
I've got a lambswool coat too, bought when we were in northern Canada one winter and have no probs.with wearing that, either.
Oh! and I eat meat too.Smile
