Ovaltine or horlicks?

Frownette · 24/11/2019 12:06

This is possibly the most boring thread ever but I set off to the shops last night with the intention of buying ovaltine. It was nowhere in sight, only horlicks.

Horlicks appears to have the advantage in that you only have to add water (n.ot milk).

Any thoughts??

[vom] We used to get free Horlicks at work and even then no one would ever drink it. Even the chocolate flavoured one.

Are you sure there wasn't something else in the entire ship that you could have drunk? Grin

I used to love Horlicks as a kid and would eat it by the spoonful.

Now I've graduated to Ovaltine, I don't think I could go back - haven't tried it in a long time though.

Both need to be made with milk to taste like anything.

I think most people’s preferences for either Horlicks or Ovaltine seem to depend on what they were used to drinking in childhood. My DGF has knocked back Horlicks every coherent night of his adult life. He loads his mug with four heaped spoonfuls, creating a cup of almost silken naughtiness (three spoonfuls is more socially acceptable). He then also plops in some brown sugar, which is frankly disgraceful, since all these drinks already have sugar added to them.
My DMIL, meanwhile, is only tame when she has a cup of Ovaltine in her hand. Its creation is a terrific rigmarole, involving whisking the drink (for texture), pouring it out and finally tapping the spoon on the side of the mug.

I like both. Although I'm sure you can get versions of both that can be made with milk or water. Much nicer when made with milk and I much prefer ovaltine to normal hot chocolate

Debbiecurtbag · 24/11/2019 13:13

I think they are pretty much the same thing tbh

iklboo · 24/11/2019 13:19

Horlicks with cinnamon sprinkled on top.

Could I put forward Milo for consideration, malty, chocolatey loveliness but must be made with milk for full flavour.

mistydayswampwitch · 24/11/2019 13:23

I would always make Horlicks with hot milk not water!

You can get instant Horlicks now where you just add hot water.

BillywigSting · 24/11/2019 13:26

Half ovaltine half hot chocolate powder made with milk.

Tastes like melted maltesers and is delicious

mistydayswampwitch · 24/11/2019 14:43

Yes I know you can. I still make it with Milk. It's much nicer.

FrappeLatte · 24/11/2019 14:45

Definitely ovaltine!

FlorenceFloss · 15/02/2023 09:33

I understand they are very similar and both can be made with water or milk. However, go with Ovaltine as its allegedly still made by firm that invented it wereas Horlicks is now owned by big conglomerate Unilever with links to allegedly unethical GlaxoSmithCline.
