3.5yr temp of 39.6?!

I feel like an awful mummy because I don’t know what to do.

Oldest dd11 had the flu last weekend, has got over it and now just an annoying cough.

Dd3 has caught it and for the past few days been abit unwell. Yesterday she fell asleep at 9am after waking at 5 (normal wake up time), then again at 1.30 and asked to go bed at 5.30. She then slept from 5.30 until 8.30!!

Iv just taken her temp and it’s 39.5, she’s so poorly bless her. She says she doesn’t want anyone though so won’t let me cuddle her etc!

She’s had some calpol and is still in bed on her iPad with juice (she’s never normally allowed juice)

Dd11 shares rooms so is sat in bed keeping an eye on her.

What do I do? I feel crappy! Dh is working 12 today 😩 she’s a daddy’s girl so could do with his help!

Can you use neurofen too? I am always advised to alternate 2-3 hourly when my 2 year old has a temp? I also strip them off and put a fan on. Plenty of fluids too. Hope they improve soon.

Mine had the horrible flu like virus a few weeks ago. It floored the whole family in the end but my 6yo was particularly poorly.

I'd work out th me max number of doses of Calpol / Nurofen she can have in 24h and administer those. You may find using both that you dont need to actually give the max dose but it will help her feel more comfortable if she has a few "double doses". Let her eat and drink whatever she fancies / can manage and let her rest abd sleep as much as possible.

6yo was off school for a whole week with it Shock 4yo came down with it a few days after he started and myself, DP and granny who watches the kids a few days per week had it the week after the kids were better.

NHS advice is not to use both ibuprofen and paracetamol for children unless under medical advice. This is often recommended on Mumsnet but it does go against the guidelines.

Thanks all! Dh has had it this week too but gone work.

I don’t drive so have no way of getting nurophen 😩

Sorry OP but if your DH has gone to work it sure as hell isn't flu

minipie · 24/11/2019 09:57

Is there a neighbour or local parent you could ask to lend you some nurofen? DD age 4 had these awfully high temps last week and nurofen was the only thing that touched it.

Foxton20 · 24/11/2019 10:38

He went work practically dying. He works on a computer so nothing physical. He refuses to take him off and has never had a day off.

She’s fell back asleep 😩

Are you keeping an eye on her temperature? You could ring 111 for advice.

changeforprivacy · 24/11/2019 10:43

I hope his computer is isolated.

KnifeAngel · 24/11/2019 11:32

Have you any neighbours who might have some Ibuprofen. It's great for bringing temperatures down. You need to be careful of convulsions if she gets too hot.

LittleBearPad · 24/11/2019 11:35

If she’s asleep let her sleep. Get your DH to get nurofen on his way home. Keep giving her calpol and try to get her to drink water/juice whatever.

flapjackfairy · 24/11/2019 11:35

Make sure she is drinking loads. Sloppy jelly is a good plan and v soothing for the throat.

queenofarles · 24/11/2019 12:03

Wipe her arms and legs with a Wet washcloth, but not too cold water.
Can you ring your local pharmacy and ask if they can deliver? Don’t want to alarm you but that’s quite high.
Our GP suggested using ibuprofen when temp is above 39, and then 4-6 hours later Calpol.

Makinganewthinghappen · 24/11/2019 12:36

Changefor it drives me mad when people if you can .... then it’s not flu.

A few years ago I listened to that advice and carried on my day thinking I was fine as I could walk around. Carrying on instead as though I had a cold instead of seeking medical advice for flu that was actually not just flu but flu, pneumonia and sepsis nearly killed me!

You most certainly can walk, go to work, and basically function with flu. Some people are ok until they are really really not ok Grin

NerrSnerr · 24/11/2019 12:39

Could you ask friends or on your local FB page to see if anyone has any nurofen they can bring round. I did that when I was stuck at home with 2 children with chicken pox (not for nurofen obs) and someone was able to drop it round.

Foxton20 · 24/11/2019 21:29

So her temp has been up and down all day with calpol and she’s slept a few times. She went bed at 7 and has just woken up with a big nose bleed. Shall I ring 111?

OP posts:
Alpacamabags · 24/11/2019 21:32

Defo call for advice. Especially if not normally prone to bleeds

NaiceHamPlease · 24/11/2019 21:33

YES!

Bluemascara4 · 24/11/2019 21:34

Yes! Please call 111 .

Foxton20 · 24/11/2019 21:34

Sorry, I feel useless 😩

OP posts:
ChickenofDoom · 24/11/2019 21:36

100% yes.

OctoberLovers · 24/11/2019 21:36

Yes. Ring 111 at the very least.

What is her temperature? Has it been coming down with calpol?

Many wee's today?

AnotherEmma · 24/11/2019 21:36

I hope you are calling 111.
I would prepare to take her to A&E in case that's the advice you're given.

OctoberLovers · 24/11/2019 21:37

Is her nose still bleeding?
