Conveyancers- how many extra hours do you work?

I feel I need to up my game a bit and fit in more hours, so I'm curious what others do.

My friend’s Dh is one. He works six days a week until 11pm every night. He’s a partner though.

Why do you think you need to up your game op? Are you reaching your billable hours target? Are you being put on a pip?

Can't help with answers sorry, I'm in litigation, just interested by your phrasing.

My dad owns a small, local conveyancing firm, he does the commercial side & his partner does residential. My dad works until 11pm or later most evenings, plus all day Sunday. He always has done, I remember him never being available on Sundays when I was a child Sad He very rarely leaves the office before 8pm & always takes work home with him, even if he leaves earlier.

Campervan69 · 24/11/2019 19:25

I have recently had to increase my hours. Was doing 9-3 4 days but am so busy was doing a full time case load in those hours. So I'm now doing 9-4.15 5 days. I'm billing around £15 k per month. I'm hoping not to increase my actual case load although I'm busier than ever ATM.

MinnieMountain · 25/11/2019 06:59

I don't have targets. Sounds odd but I'm in a team that just does title checks. They keep a note of how many we do, but it's never been a problem.

Maybe to justify the pay rise is requested and got recently (I wasn't being paid market rate though).

It's a mixture of knowing how busy we are, knowing that the other part-timer on our team works longer hours and wanting to progress in the firm. Although progression would be to "Director in the Title Checking Team".

Confusedofengland that sounds tough. I work PT as DH can't (he's a contractor). I'm aware of the effect my being around less might have on 6yo DS.

And I suspect he does commercial property rather than conveyancing

Was that directed to me, @HugoSpritz? If so, no, it is conveyancing.

Wow that's so condescending! I know plenty of partners who specialise in residential conveyancing. "Low level work" on a thread where everyone posting is a conveyance. FFS.

Campervan69 · 25/11/2019 18:22

I honestly don't think you have any idea how patronising and pompous you sound.

VenusClapTrap · 25/11/2019 22:04

He’s doing pretty well actually. 🙄

GU24Mum · 25/11/2019 22:09

OP, how many years PQE are you? I might have a suggestion!

KatyaK · 25/11/2019 22:11

What a load of condescending nonsense @HugoSpritz. Not every firm is a giant practice in the city, of course there are partners practising in residential conveyancing Confused saying it's low level work for assistant solicitors to do is A) shockingly patronising and B) ignorant of how different it is to commercial property anyway. They're different specialisms, it's not like you get to a certain PQE level and decide oh I'll switch to commercial this week Hmm

OP, I don't do extra hours every week but take work home or go in early a few days every couple of months. My firm are quite laid back and a nice place to work with plenty of support staff though!

MinnieMountain · 26/11/2019 07:17

I'm 12 years PQE. I've never had ambitions of being a partner.

KatyaK thank you for the sensible response.

It's been interesting seeing the attitudes towards conveyancing on here. I'm well aware that some other solicitors think "proper" property work is commercial.
