When I get married next summer my surname will change to a Polish one (no need for anybody to suggest I keep my own name - we decided on this together for several valid reasons).

I'm just curious about what to expect really and if you've ever encountered any difficulties or prejudice based on your name? We live in the UK

Oh really Francis? Do you think they struggle with it or they really just refuse to even try?

When I went to school (long time ago now) the school newsletters were printed in English and Polish. Lots of kids with Polish names some of them had parents (usually mums) who had limited English. Big ex-pat community in the area (WW2 refugees). Wasn't a problem.

I think that my surname is a little difficult to be pronounced by some Polish people so I don’t expect Brits to get it! I have never come across any prejudice based on my surname though. If anything, it’s a good conversation starter at schools, interviews, doctors etc 😄

marvellousnightforamooncup · 23/11/2019 19:11

I had to change my name by deed poll to the ska ending not the ski. I didn't want the masculine version.

marvellousnightforamooncup · 23/11/2019 19:12

Posted too soon. I love my name and have never had any problems or prejudice against me.

AShaveAndAHarecutHalfPrice · 23/11/2019 19:14

I love Polish names, some of my favourite people have Polish routes.

Longdistance · 23/11/2019 19:20

No, but my original surname was Hungarian. My first name was Anglisised if there’s such a thing. As in spelt with a C instead of a K, note my username. Anywhere I’ve been with my maiden name they’ve pronounced it incorrectly 🤷🏼‍♀️ Meh!

I’m now married and my name sounds like I’m Irish 😂 my surname is very Irish, and my first name is a town in Ireland.

So, when choosing names for dc, please consider where they will live,

I've known a few people of Polish heritage, all with very identifiable surnames which I've been able to spell and pronounce, with just one exception.

AnnoyedByAlfieBear · 23/11/2019 19:41

My grandparents came over after the war so I'm second generation.

I've never ever had any instances of prejudice until after I married and double barrelled my name. (Someone asked me if the window cleaner refused to go home. I told them I was the window cleaner).

Pronunciation is sometimes awkward but in waiting rooms I generally wait for some one to saw "Annoyed... Err...?" And I know it's me. Which has never bothered me. As far as spellings go, I've honestly had more people make mistakes with my husband's English name in the last 10 years than I've had the whole rest of my life.

I love my Polish name. I have the feminine ska ending.

Needallthesleep · 23/11/2019 19:44

Yes me! I double barrelled when I got married because (and this is terrible) I was worried about discrimination if/when I applied for jobs. My DS is also double barrelled for the same reason.
