Are there any diverse market towns?

Just been watching Escape to the Perfect Town on BBC which was quite interesting. A London couple with 2 kids looking to move to Yorkshire to get more fur their £250k than a 1-bed flat. As someone in (almost) their initial position, I can see lots of benefits to finding a lovely market town somewhere and moving outside London to grow our family. But I can't think of anywhere that isn't 99% white. Are there any ethnically diverse market towns in England? I suspect the answer is no and cities like Bristol or Brighton are a better choice.
Are there any people of colour on here who have made the move to a market town?

I know Warwick had a Black Lady Mayor though it's not that diverse in itself I don't think.

JoJoSM2 · 23/11/2019 15:26

I don’t know about the cutsey/upmarket market towns but I’m sure there will be smaller towns that are more diverse.

JoJoSM2 · 23/11/2019 15:28

I think it’s also still possible to get a small house for 250k in London.

MuswellBill · 23/11/2019 15:42

But where @JoJoSM2 ?

I'm not sure having once had a black mayor fits the bill @drspouse Grin

Not in N Yorks there aren’t

JoJoSM2 · 23/11/2019 15:56

I think the borough of Bexley has some very affordable houses. It also has very low crime rates and grammar schools so could be a very decent place to live for a family.

itsniceoopnorth · 23/11/2019 16:00

You could always be a trailblazer !

drspouse · 23/11/2019 16:06

@MuswellBill I used to know her slightly and she's a long standing resident with a lot of family in the area but I agree.
However Leamington is fairly diverse.

AgeLikeWine · 23/11/2019 16:06

If by ‘market town’ you mean a place which is clearly and obviously affluent and middle-class, then it is highly likely that most such place will, by definition, be predominantly white with perhaps a smattering of Asian professionals.

If you are looking for more diversity, then you can certainly find it, but it will be diversity of both class and ethnicity. Loughborough, for example, is a diverse market town which has both middle and working class areas.

BuffaloCauliflower · 23/11/2019 16:09

@JoJoSM2 you’re wrong. I live on the outskirts and can’t get a house of any description for less than £350,000

JulietTango · 23/11/2019 16:13

I live in a market town which, while 99% white, isn't 99% British. It depends what sort of diversity you want really.

JoJoSM2 · 23/11/2019 16:14

@BuffaloCauliflower

Just put in ‘borough of Bexley’ into Prime Location/Rightmove and houses do come up for the money.

For 350k, I could probably find you a two up two down not to far from myself (Sutton) which is a fantastic family area.

CheddarCheesy · 23/11/2019 16:15

I live in a market town and would say it is 99% white British.

GrumpyHoonMain · 23/11/2019 16:18

Leicestershire / Warwickshire / Hertfordshire / Northamptonshire / Buckinghamshire - most of the market towns are diverse. Yorkshire and Cheshire often have brown / white divides due to systematic racism - in the sense that when brown people move into an affluent town, the racist and affluent white element tends to move out.

Minnie747 · 23/11/2019 16:19

I was coming on to say Loughborough, too.

HepzibahGreen · 23/11/2019 16:19

There are lots of small towns in yorkshire that are nowhere near 100% white (if that's what you mean by "diverse"). They are quite working class though, so not really diverse. For true diversity you need a mix of ethnicities and economic means.

Oblomov19 · 23/11/2019 16:24

I don't agree with the above views that most places are that predominantly white. Of course some are. But most?

What about the outskirts of London?
Surrey?
Where I live is very very diverse, with ds's being at school with a huge range of ethnicities: black, A huge amount of families where one parent is white the other black, Indian, Asian, lots of Malaysians, huge number polish.

So that is not too bad!

JustMe9 · 23/11/2019 16:28

Yorkshire - Bradford; Lancashire - Blackburn

ILikeyourHairyHands · 23/11/2019 16:32

I don't think Bradford or Blackburn can be described as market towns, Bradford's a city!

spacepyramid · 23/11/2019 16:38

I wouldn't describe Bradford as a good place to live either - having been in areas where non-whites are unwelcome and areas where non-Asians are not welcome I wouldn't live there if you paid me a small fortune.
The segregation and racism is too bad.

FrostythefeckinSnowman · 23/11/2019 16:41

Lots of Brexit supporters in L’boro. Sad

GrumpyHoonMain · 23/11/2019 16:43

Leicestershire is full of affluent and diverse towns. Example the Oadby to Market Harborough route

GrumpyHoonMain · 23/11/2019 16:47

Loughborough (and North Leicestershire) might be diverse but it’s not really somewhere that’s great to live if you aren’t white working class. Lots of no go areas and BNP pubs. Even the so called posher areas eg Quorn / Melton / Rothley etc aren’t great for non-whites.

Gingerninja01 · 23/11/2019 16:48

Not in Surrey!
