Can anyone translate shampoo marketing speak?

A suitably trivial topic for Chat, but I was in the shower and noticed on a tube of shampoo a caption saying

"No buildup formula (so you never have to switch)".

Maybe I was off sick the day at adult school that they taught the topic of shampooing (never really understood what conditioner does), but what on earth does the above mean?

"You never have to switch" - do they mean you never have to switch to another shampoo? What is "buildup formula" and why does its absence mean you never have to switch? Confused

I think they're implying that the shampoo can be fully washed out of your hair with no traces left, i.e. no "build up" where your hair becomes overloaded with the stuff. Presumably this could mean that you're less likely to become allergic or intolerant of the product as it's not in your hair for days on end. No idea if this is scientifically true, but I think that's what they're claiming.

It might've helped if they'd made it hyphenated, as in no-buildup formula, so it's a formula that doesn't build up.

It mean jack shit, they are all the same unless you go for different ingredients. e.g no parabens, alcohol, etc.
No surprise but the most free from is Johnson's baby top to toe.

Shampoos leave some behind on your hair when you rinse. This causes “build up”.
This one is pretending it doesn’t.

Thanks, tectonic - that hyphen does make it a bit clearer...

'87% of 31 participants agree'
'results against washing with shampoo only'

DadDadDad · 23/11/2019 14:27

stripey - as 85%, 86%, 88% and 89% of 31 wouldn't be a whole number of people, I'm impressed by your attention to detail with your made-up statistic. Grin

I always smile when I see those statistics Grin

they don't really help making a decision...

tectonicplates · 23/11/2019 14:41

87% of 31 is 26.97, so there's a person who's not quite whole.

DadDadDad · 23/11/2019 15:38

No but 27 / 31 rounds to 87%, whereas 26/31 rounds to 84% so my point is that if they said 85% you'd know they'd got their maths wrong.
