How often do you service your car?

Just that really... I have a second hand car (5 yrs old- 35,000 miles) and it's telling me it needs an interim service. I know it was serviced and MOT'd in April (I bought it in May). I also think I'll keep it until it dies rather than sell it on but I was wondering about this interim service. Does it need serviced every 6 months?

Depends on the car. Most are yearly or 16,000 miles whichever comes first
Google or handbook should tell you. Some are more often, some are 2 yearly. Could just need an oil and filter change

Sparklingbrook · 23/11/2019 09:27

Mine has an annual service which I think is the norm. Every 6 months seems too much unless you do loads of miles.

Annually

I think it's at it! I have not even done 5000 in it. I usually service my car annually but this new Volvo seems to want more attention. It's flashing every time I put it on. Cheeky at this time of year.

Every 15,000km. Which works out at twice a year. Oil checked every month.

Sparklingbrook · 23/11/2019 09:34

Mine will come up with a spanner thing on the dash way before any service is due. Grin

Sparklingbrook · 23/11/2019 09:35

I check my oil/tyres/screenwash every week myself.

surlycurly · 23/11/2019 09:35

Yeah that's what it's doing. And then I got an email from the garage I bought it from saying it needed it's six monthly service...

OP posts:
surlycurly · 23/11/2019 09:36

Yeah I do all the basic maintenance myself too. I've just never had a car moan at me six monthly. It was my friend before... I'm going off it!

I am not sure how to get rid of the spanner. Is it a ploy to get me back to the dealership for servicing so only they can switch it off?

granadagirl · 23/11/2019 09:40

That’s the like internal management
Reminder guide
The car’s computer doesn’t know it’s been serviced
I have a mini and it tells me when next service is, mine are every year
But some are bigger services than others
But I change the oil every year,
Have a look in handbook it should of been stamped in the service booklet
The mileage and what service

userxx · 23/11/2019 09:41

Mines yearly, would be pissed off if she started asking for 6 monthly services. Mines due for its service and MOT next week, she's beeping at me at the moment.

stephenkingfan · 23/11/2019 09:45

Every 10-15k miles

surlycurly · 23/11/2019 09:46

Thanks all. Will phone my mechanic pal and see what he says.

Maybe they didn’t reset the service light/indicator at y to he last service. I have a Volvo and those lights are annoyingly. You can reset it yourself, it’s a combination of the key position and pressing the speedometer button -google has the info.

I think the Volvo services are by mileage so if you are racking up the miles it might come in sooner. I don’t think mine comes on 6 monthly though.

katseyes7 · 23/11/2019 09:56

Mine is serviced yearly. To keep the service history up to date, according to the dealer (Toyota).
However.... my current one is an 18 plate from March 2018. lt had it's first service in March this year, despite only having 3000 miles on the clock at the time. There was nothing actually done to it, apart from the usual safety checks.

The next service will be due in March 2020. But the dealer says that every alternate service is a 'big' one, and therefore costs a lot more than the other one.
What annoys me is that l don't think a car with 3000 miles on the clock needed a service. Or that when the next 'big' one is due, it will still have well under 10,000 miles on the clock. Which is, in effect, still a 'new' car.
My cousin has a car of the same vintage of mine (different make) and her services are either every two years, or 20,000 miles, whichever comes first.
The 'big' service for my car costs around £250.
l'm contemplating two options.
a) When they contact me about the next service, to refuse to pay for the 'big' service as if we were taking into account the mileage, it still wouldn't be even due the first service, and to say l'll only pay for a standard service.
b) Just take it to another garage (rather than the dealership) where it'll cost me half that.
lf the dealership insist on me paying for the 'big' service l think l'll vote with my feet and go elsewhere. l'm not planning on changing the car, so is the service history really going to make that much difference so long as it's maintained and in good order?

surlycurly · 23/11/2019 10:06

I wonder if it is a mileage issue then? I know I've done more miles than the previous owner used to. But how would the dealership know? I'll need to look at the log book.

Mine goes in every 16,000 miles or 2 years.

ReginaGeorgeous · 23/11/2019 10:13

I have a full service annually, done at the same time as the MOT. I do about 8,000 miles a year. Wouldn't occur to me to service it more frequently.
