Since my local M&S bakery has been refurbished, they have started to display unwrapped loaves on shelves and also on a table in the store. There is a thin strip of paper around the middle of the bread, and there are also paper bags to put the bread into.
I've not bought any since they started doing this as don't like to buy bread displayed like this. Don't mind getting a loaf from a bakery where the bread is on a shelf behind the counter.
A couple of weeks later they reverted back to wrapping the bread, but now have gone back to unwrapped.
Went in the shop today and noticed a woman picking up loaves and giving them a good squeeze and then putting them back on the display. I found a member of staff to speak to and they told me that this was a problem, management knew it happened, and there has been a lot of negative customer feedback. They told me management think that 'Naked Bread' is the way forward and it is here to stay.
The shelves were packed with Naked Bread tonight, so looks like it's not only me that's not buying.
Giving the bread a miss is not going to be a great loss, I can go to the nearby Aldi for all my naked bread requirements if needed, but if what the assistant said is true then I find the local management team's attitude arrogant.
