What to do about this jacket that smells of perfume

I bought a very high quality, expensive jacket on Ebay for a ridiculously good price. It was an auction ending at an awkward time and nobody else bid.

When I opened the parcel I very nearly retched from the smell. It was so awful it gave me a headache.

I really don't think there's any point in sending the seller a message as the listing didn't actually say it was scent-free or anything. I'm often shocked by people's lack of awareness of how much their perfume bothers other people, but I just don't see what good can become of sending a complaint, as she'll probably just claim it didn't smell and we'll get nowhere, and I don't want any more stress in my life right now. I'm also not going to leave feedback at all as I just don't know of an accurate way of doing it.

If it'd been a washable item I'd just wash it, but it's definitely dry clean only.

I don't have a garden so I can't air it.

I could pay for dry cleaning but it might not fully work, and I don't know if I love it that much to spend the money.

I don't feel I can sell it on in this state.

Shall I just cut my losses and donate it to a charity shop, or would that be unfair as I'd be lumbering them with the smell? It's in very good condition apart from that.

Can you hang it by an open window for a while?

Movinghouseatlast · 22/11/2019 18:30

If it's expensive then just get it dry cleaned. It will be £10 max I would imagine.

FlibbertyGiblets · 22/11/2019 18:31

Hang it from curtain pole in front of opened window?

Put it in a plastic bag and leave it i the freezer overnight?
I don’t know if it will work, but worth a try?

oohnicevase · 22/11/2019 18:32

What's it made of ? Dry cleaning won't always get rid of the smell but if it was a bargain then surely it's worth a punt?!

baubled · 22/11/2019 18:32

Do you have a supermarket dry cleaners near you? I had mine done in Morrisons for £10, is that more than you would happily spend?

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 22/11/2019 18:48

Can you hang it up in the bathroom while and after you've had a shower so it gets sort of steamed? It might loosen the scent up a bit, so to speak. I don't know, I'm sure even the strongest of smells will wear off eventually, unless the previous owner spilt essential oils over it or something. Do you recognise the scent?

spiderlight · 22/11/2019 18:52

If it's a lost cause anyway, I'd try washing it on a very gentle cycle first. I've washed dry clean only things in the past and they've come out fine.

Berthatydfil · 22/11/2019 18:54

Put it in a bag with loads of bicarbonate powder and leave it for a couple of days. Bicarbonate absorbs smells really well

EstebanTheMagnificent · 22/11/2019 19:33

Do you have somewhere you can hang it and leave it? Steaming it will freshen it up.

The perfume smell will fade but I wonder if it has been deliberately applied to mask another smell.

Moominfan · 22/11/2019 19:42

I sell one eBay and depop and would be sad to hear negative feedback. If it was one of my customers I would offer to cover cost of dry cleaning or offer a return. Any who eBay always side with customers but that's another tangent. If you don't get a positive response from the seller leave it with eBay

goingtotown · 22/11/2019 19:54

Berthatydfill Yes to Bicarbonate of soda absorbing smells.

FirenzeArno · 23/11/2019 09:36

Febreeze and hang overnight in the bathroom

Mrscog · 23/11/2019 09:37

I would recommend hanging it in a steamy bathroom for a couple of days, then try bag with bicarb and then decide.
