When was the last time you felt the UK was in good hands?

I watched the debate yesterday and while I think one person would probably make better decisions for the general public than the other, I wouldn't entrust the country to either.
Looking across Lib Dem, Brexit party or Green there is nobody, I feel, who would make the country a better place.

This made me think, when was the last time you felt a government in charge made things significantly better and left the country better off than it was before?

The Blair years without a doubt

Another one for Blair

It’s good to see some credit for John Major. He may have been uninspiring but, looking back, he did a decent job and his reputation has certainly improved since he left office.

He negotiated Britain’s opt-out from the Euro, laid much of the groundwork for the GFA and handed on a strong economy to New Labour.

If we go back to no fees, tax payers pay. All of them. Including the least well paid. Is that fair Yes it's fair because all of us benefit from a well educated workforce.

I agree with 1997. I was so depressed in 1992 when the Tories got in again although I agree Major wasn't so bad.

John Major is actually a pretty good guy for a tory. Quite centrist and moderate

TinklyLittleLaugh · 21/11/2019 19:57

Interesting that quite a lot of people still have some Blair love. He is always absolutely vilified by the press, all the good things he did dismissed.

Interesting too to see a piece this week about Blair’s part in saving Kosovo. Is his legacy being re-examined in the face of the absolute shower of shite we have as political options now?

Branleuse · 21/11/2019 23:30

Well sucking up to America and joining their bloody illegal war is rather a large mistake, but i think most couldnt deny that life was better in so many ways under him.

John Major had a difficult inheritance as PM, and his tenure was inevitably overshadowed by the troubles of the 1980s. If he were leader of the Conservatives now I would be far more likely to vote for them. As a leader, I think he is better qualified than Corbyn,

As it stands, in terms of leadership qualities, I feel Corbyn is the lesser of evils vs Bojo. The Labour manifesto promises much, but I am sceptical about the pragmatics of delivery - however, the Tory manifesto promises so little, I think it's worth gambling on Labour.

The Conservative party is much further to the right than in previous years. If it was still lead by people like John Major and Ken Clarke I could just about consider voting for them in the right circumstances.

Back then a lot of the main people in the party were state educated or from relatively normal backgrounds so were in touch with the electorate. Nowadays the party is lead by Old Etonians who have no idea of what life is like for most people (Boris Johnson describing his £250k Telegraph salary as 'chicken feed').
