This seems sooooo young to start using anything other than soap and water on skin, but DD has got quite a lot of spots on her cheeks and nose, and they hurt her.

Suggestions?? I remember using fairly brutal oxy-something when I was a teen, but hopefully there's something less horrible?

Just joining your thread for the advice, if that's ok? I don't really have anything to add, just to say I noticed that my 10yo DD had quite a few spots on her forehead a few months ago, so I popped into Boots and picked up some Clearasil pads, and some pink grapefruit cleanser and moisturizer. I can't say it's made a huge difference, but at least it's got her into a good daily routine. So, watching with interest..

Clear start by Dermalogica
Spots and Stripes - all natural

Boots has an own brand cucumber range, and also a tea tree range which has face wipes/face scrub/ face wash: spot wand etc

I don't know if this will help as I use it for myself not a child but for the last year I was getting really bad breakouts (I'm 29), always had good skin before. Tried loads of different things. The best thing so far is stopping using water and soap on my face and onky cleansing with micellar water. The garnier one, and cerave moisturising lotion. I still get a few spots every now and then but not as bad. Sometimes I use this 3 times a day. Also if I do get a few I use salon cream before the cerave moisturiser and sometimes TCP.

Savlon cream, not salon

millymollymoomoo · 19/11/2019 23:11

Don’t use astringents!
Just a very gentle cleanser like avene

About that age my younger sister got chickenpox, and while I didn't catch the actual pox, it did have an effect on my skin and that's when my acne started. If I remember rightly I think I remember my mother getting hold of some Clearasil soap after we had a chat with the practice nurse, though I don't know if it's still around.

Lots of very gentle soaps around too - I see people have already mentioned cucumber and tea tree, and there are some very gentle castile soaps. See if the pharmacist or practice nurse can recommend something maybe?

My ten / near 11 yr old DD had quite a few spots on forehead and chin. We tried balance me spot cream
,neutrogena orange label acne wash and treatment.
La roche posay effaclar
Then I got fed up buying loads that just didnt work ( by the way she isint one bit bothered about them but has been brill doing the creams morning and pm. ) then took a photo of her and off to GP. He was fab. Prescribed her differin gel at night and fucidin during day. She uses a eucerin gel facial wash which has been v good. I was a bit reluctant at her age going down prescription route but so happy I did as Acne is soul destroying as a teen. And its a lot better TG . Its not totally gone but undercontrol. With Differin gel there is a purge period where the skin breaks out big style and then settles after like 4 months
Hope this helps !!

My ds suffers from exzema, tried lots of different creams but nothing worked (some of the recommended creams actually made it worse). I then tried aloe vera gel (pure from health shop) it worked almost immediately.

totallyradllama · 19/11/2019 23:22

Sudocrem on the spots?

morriseysquif · 19/11/2019 23:24

My daughter uses cetaphil with a silicone face sponge like this

but I got mine from Superdrug

I am really worried about DD getting spots, I was plagued from the age of 12 to my late 20s and refused to look in mirrors at all. I suppose the upshot is that I would help her deal with it, not just not bother like my mum. Confused

I think a little tea tree oil or some salicylic acid based spot cream on individual spots would be good too.

Fluandseptember · 19/11/2019 23:38

thank you! Clearasil - I remember that... I think her skin is just too young for anything that fierce, BUT no matter what I think, her spots hurt.

Dermalogica looks good but oh, expensive. Spots and Stripes too, though I realise that I feel that the clear and astringent things are 'better' than the creamier stuff. I'm just a soap and water person myself, so no model for my daughter on any of this...

I use micellar water too
It’s the only thing that I irks for me so I have also bought some for my 10 yr old
So far so good for her

BlueLights22 · 19/11/2019 23:48

I would highly recommend la roche posay effaclar duo, but as a cream. For a cleanser I would recommend cerave moisturizing cleanser...this is super super gently and not fragranced (And also on the cheaper side) so won't irritate acne prone skin but will cleanse nicely with the effaclar after as a treatment. I've suffered with acne from around the same age and used to use similar acne products as youve mentioned which were often too harsh and just made the problem worse. Acne prone skin is often just very sensitive and needs to be treated gently as tempting as it is to scrub it all off! Xx

Dove soap bar on the face, I think I heard about it from YouTube videos? Meant to work wonders and I’ve seen some brill before and afters

DotBall · 20/11/2019 00:03

Use pure witch hazel - some on a cotton pad wiped round face every night. Refreshing yet soothing and not astringent. Boots is very good value.
