Italian hot chocolate

Years ago when I went to Italy the hot chocolate you can get there in cafes is sooooo nice. And completely different to here. Like proper thick. I haven't been abroad for years but I presume that's not changed?!

I wondered if anyone knows if you can buy it on the internet here? What would it be? If it's possible?

I don't know if you can buy it, sorry. But years ago I was in a small Italian village with a friend and we had the thickest hot chocolate imaginable. If you stood your spoon upright in the middle it fell over very slowly. Delicious 😋

My DM had a really thick hot chocolate in Cavtat, Slovenia this year - it was like drinking melted chocolate, she said! Wish I could recreate it!

If it is anything like Spanish hot chocolate then the secret ingredient is cornflour!!

I make this in the winter, seriously thick! There are recipes on line but it's usually 4 ingredients: hot chocolate powder of choice (or actual chocolate), sugar, milk and cornflour. Its the cornflour that thickens it up

Bloody delicious. Bugger, want some now....

You can buy it on amazon . I got some last year after trying it in an Italian coffee shop in Glasgow . It’s in little sachet packs but I can’t remember the brand name sorry !

Just checked my amazon order history and it was Ciobar classic .

JellyfishAndShells · 19/11/2019 21:42

It’s really like a thin custard - cornflour is the magic ingredient.

Camomila · 19/11/2019 21:51

Ciobar! Always bring some back to England with me.

To make hot chocolate at home Italians (at least all my friends/relatives) mix cocoa butter, sugar and cornflour in a pan of warm milk on the hob. The tricky bit is the quantities, I don't put much sugar in when I do it.

Sgtmajormummy · 19/11/2019 21:59

Yep, cornflour.
The ingredients of Ciobar are: sugar, low fat cocoa, cornstarch, flavorings and salt, to which you add hot milk. Making a shiny, starchy gloop which Is not actually all that nice...Until you add a generous helping of spray cream. Hmm

The PP’s recipe above has added real chocolate which makes all the difference IMO.

Ah thanks everyone

I will make a note of these

This ciobar one is very expensive but maybe it'll worth it

On my Christmas list.

Will have to try making it myself!

@sockittome123 Cavtat is in Croatia, not SloveniaBlush

Camomila · 19/11/2019 23:16

I meant cocoa powder, not butter Blush. But not hot chocolate powder. You could also melt chocolate squares in with the powder, not the really bitter stuff. Maybe 50% cocoa?

If you have one you can froth it up a bit at the end with a little cappucino wisk, that gets rid of any cornflour gloopyness.
