Osteopenia - anyone got experience?

I was diagnosed today after breaking my foot back in May with no idea how it happened (I am not a runner - yet). Had a bit of a wait for the DEXA scan but today it's been diagnosed as osteopenia. I'm a bit shocked as I'm only 35 and have only one of the risk factors (my mother has osteoporosis but she's in her mid seventies).

Now I have to wait for my GP to get her bum in gear and in the mean time I just know I'm going to freak out and work myself into a tangle over the whole thing.

Does anyone have knowledge or experience in what this means for me, or about the way forward? I could use a gentle hand-hold.

Was also diagnosed, aged 64 though, after falling and breaking my shoulder, it's nothing to panic about, Gp will give you vit D and calcium supplements and advise on diet to include more calcium, milk, cheese, that sort of thing, you will have another DEXA scan in five years to see if the condition is improving or worsening.

I was diagnosed by a DeXA scan with osteopaenia at 35 after being on sodium valproate for epilepsy for 15 years.
I take Adcal D3 twice a day and on my last DEXA scan at 41 my bone scores had improved.
Luckily haven't broken any bones!!
Don't forget to declare that you have Osteopaenia if you have to buy holiday insurance.

Meant to say, I stopped the sodium valproate as soon as I learnt I had Osteopaenia & started another epilepsy drug.
Since then I've been told that several epilepsy drugs put people at higher risk of poor bone density! It should be more well publicised I think.

waves I was diagnosed with it yesterday (aged 42) after fracturing both knees - got three days into Couch to 5k back in June this year, been in pain ever since. Consultant yesterday was a bit confusing - quite dismissive of the osteopenia and just said it doesn't explain the fractures and wants to investigate more. Feeling a bit lost; no obvious risk factors, and not sure what I should do. Sadly no knowledge to share, but a mutual hand hold would be lovely Flowers

Fellow people! I was going to write yay but it's not that yay.. nice to have some solidarity support.

GoGo! Ouch both knees at once?? You poor thing. I got sent for the scan when I hadn't a clue how I managed to get a stress fracture in my foot. All the mutual hand holding. So has the doctor said running is bad?

Pro tips Lily thank you! Will remember to update my regular holiday insurance notes.

Mismo your words are so comforting! I was definitely working myself into a small tizzy already.

I was diagnosed with osteopenia at age 37 after having a dexa scan following early menopause. I worked myself up into a right state and was convinced i’d be breaking bones regularly. I’m now 47 and the only broken bone I have had is a toe after kicking a piece of furniture (so i’m still clumsy...). I’d say try not to worry too much, but keep things checked. If I could have told myself that ten years ago, and actually listened to it, I’d have saved myself a lot of angst! I’m now crossing my fingers I haven’t jinxed myself just by posting this :-)

Damntheman · 20/11/2019 06:50

No jinxing! Admittedly I've broken quite a lot of (impossible to imobilise) bones in my life, but I tried real hard 😂 I'm extremely accident prone so that's really reassuring Scrim, thank you!

I was diagnosed with it when I was 32 but I had a scan this year and, apparently, no longer have it.

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 20/11/2019 07:28

I was diagnosed at 40 as a result of long term steroid treatment.

I take calcium and vit D supplements and have a dexa scan every few years to monitor it.

Damntheman · 20/11/2019 08:27

Milo that's really interesting! Did you do anything special between the two scans to get rid of it?

Hooves, so relieved to hear that's all there is to it. The tech said something about regular injections and my mind went into wtf :o territory.
