Something in my eye

I have had something in my eye since about 10pm last night. I've rubbed it loads (I know, I know), put contact lense solution in and tried to flush whatever it is out with the eyewash from the first aid kit at work. It's still there and annoying as hell. I called the GP and the receptionist immediately told me to go to eye casualty (10 miles and I don't drive) or my local A&E, as they don't have the facilities to remove things from eyes at the surgery. I am obviously not going to go to A&E. In the meantime, what can I do? It feels as though it's no longer moving around. It's not painful, just annoying. My eyelid feels irritated and sensitive and my eye is slightly red, but nothing serious. Is there any point going to an optician's tomorrow?

Are you sure it isn’t something on the eyelid OP?
I occasionally get tiny white lumps inside the lash line. They go away pretty quickly but feel like something is ‘in’ my eye.

Pretty certain. I was getting ready for bed last night and suddenly had something in my eye. It was a sharp pain but didn't last long fortunately. It feels as though it's quite far under my top eyelid. I've tried to have a look, but there's nothing obvious in there.

Yes go to A&E, this is your eyes!

My dp had a tiny bit of metal stuck in his eyeball and had to get it removed in A&E.

You may have scratched your eyeball with the rubbing.

It can still feel as though there’s something there, but it’s just the scratch, possibly.

PurpleDaisies · 18/11/2019 19:30

It’s quite likely you’ve scratched your cornea.

The receptionist wasn’t wrong to suggest going to eye casualty. If it isn’t improving after 24 hours, that’s a sensible course of action.

Definitely go to the opticians tomorrow- they have specialist equipment and will be able to tell you if there's something there
I had this about 10 years ago - went to my GP twice, he gave me Cream 🙄, sent to A and E , they couldn't see anything.
Two weeks later I was climbing the walls with it, my vision in that eye was getting increasingly blurred, my face started to swell that side too
I luckily knew someone who was friendly with a private ophthalmologist who I paid to examine me.
Turned out I had a piece of hard plastic stuck in my eye - he removed it and immediately I started to feel better
At the time didn't think of an optician, might have saved so much time if I had!
Good luck

I had an sore, itchy red eye that turned out to be corneal ulcer. GP couldn’t pick it up but optician did with their more specialised equipment and gave me referral to eye hospital. So I’d say yes - worth trying the opticians

I love Mumsnet, been absolutely ripped apart for going to A&E after smacking my head on a coffee table (and being told to go by 111), but people are urging me to go with a fluff in my eyeGrin

I've just had another look, and the inside of my eyelid looks a bit red where it feels I've got something in my eye. I might call 111 tonight or go to the optician's tomorrow (there's a large supermarket that has one near my work). I am feeling quite under the weather and need my sleep more than anything at the moment.

Called 111 and am now waiting for someone to call me back with some advice.
