Witchofzog · 17/11/2019 13:35

I have always pronounced it eye kee aaa as does everyone I know.

But the ad just called it ii kay aaa

Who knew?

BikeRunSki · 17/11/2019 13:36

I presume that the ad version is the Swedish pronounciation.

CeeCee88 · 17/11/2019 13:37

It's a swedish company. I always knew you had to pronounce it ee-kay-ah. But I grew up in a german speaking country, so that might have helped with the pronunciation.

BlackCatSleeping · 17/11/2019 13:39

i kay ah with the i sounding like the i in it.

I think most Brits say Ay kee ah though.

thecatneuterer · 17/11/2019 13:40

Eye-Key-a It may not be how the Swedish say it, but then we don't say Par-ee either do we, even though that's how the French say it.

TheJoxter · 17/11/2019 13:40

Eye kee ah

flowery · 17/11/2019 13:42

Eye kee ah like everyone else in this country.

TheOrigFV45 · 17/11/2019 13:42

I was living in Germany when Ikea was there but not yet in the UK, so learnt to say is a Ik-kay-aaa.

I carried on saying it that way when it came to the UK and I think that's the right pronunciation, but now say eye-kee-aaa like everyone else not that we have one anywhere near where I live anyway

Jellybellythatsme · 17/11/2019 13:42

Eye -key-ah 🤷🏾‍♀️😂

TheLumpiestSpacePrincess · 17/11/2019 13:43

I say eye-kia

But the real pronunciation is ick-kia

MadisonAvenue · 17/11/2019 13:46

Eye-key-ah

TeddyBeans · 17/11/2019 13:49

Ih-key-ah cuz it's fun and people look at you weird Grin but then I like those videos where people pronounce normal words oddly

20viona · 17/11/2019 13:50

Eye key A

Whoops75 · 17/11/2019 13:57

I say - i key a

The add says ic key a

Witchofzog · 17/11/2019 13:57

That's very true about the Paris/ Paree thing

lazylinguist · 17/11/2019 14:02

Pretty normal for shops/companies/products to be pronounced differently when exported to other countries. Eye-key-a is the normal way for it to be pronounced in England. Just as Leedl vs Lidl etc.

EggysMom · 17/11/2019 14:04

I say Eye-Key-a.

I do think that the native pronunciation (as heard on the advert) makes me think that their furniture is not just icky, it's worse than icky, it's ickier Smile

lazylinguist · 17/11/2019 14:29

But it's pronounced ee-kay-a, not 'ick-ee-a'.

Sibello · 17/11/2019 14:32

Eek yah

Likethebattle · 17/11/2019 14:34

I noticed that last night but I live in Glasgow and we say ‘pree-Mark’ instead of ‘pry-Mark’ —unless it’s mil who likes to pretend she’s posh—

Likethebattle · 17/11/2019 14:35

Strike through never works on this sodding phone!

IncrediblySadToo · 17/11/2019 14:36

The ‘English’ way rather than the correct way, in order not to sound like a twat in the UK.

It’s ok pronouncing it properly if you have an accent, but otherwise it just makes you look ridiculous.

I did smile when I saw the advert and I wondered how many threads would pop up 🤣

elQuintoConyo · 17/11/2019 14:42

Eye key a : when talking to the Brits.

Ee keh a : when I'm with my Spanish friends.

Icky : when I'm talking with my husband Grin

GiantKitten · 17/11/2019 14:45

Lidl used to be pronounced Leedle here - I rang them once, years ago, & that’s what the message said. They’ve clearly given up on that now, with “middle of Lidl” Grin

Ikea staff here say it our (wrong) way, don’t they?

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 17/11/2019 14:48

I key ar

supadupapupascupa · 17/11/2019 14:49

According to my Swedish friend it's ickiest
