Move before or after Christmas?

Looks like we could exchange 2nd week on December. (We were due to exchange 3 weeks ago but there was a delay).

FTB, single guy living at home, moving into ours, the house we are buying is empty.

Any views really on whether to have a last Christmas at home and move in January or crack on with it so we’ve got the time in between Christmas and new year when both off to sort house out.

We’ve got family staying with us for two weeks over Christmas and 15 for Christmas dinner.

Dh thinks we should just crack on and move, I’d rather delay it, exchange before and complete after.

Personally I would want to move asap.

Either way people will probably be sleeping in a room full of boxes.

If you move you get to show off your new house to your guests and have some time to sort it during the christmas period.

I'm moving the first week in December. It's stressful now but at least I will be able to get unpacked and sorted a bit before Christmas. I can't imagine trying to have Christmas and pack up a house, much easier the other way around. So I say go for it as soon as possible, don't wait until January!

Mumdiva99 · 17/11/2019 09:34

Do it as soon as you can. As you've already learnt there can be unexpected delays. Any delay is a concern because buyers circumstances can change in that time....think redundancy etc - get in the new house to minimise worry and stress.

Elbeagle · 17/11/2019 09:36

I’d move now.

CatUnderTheStairs · 17/11/2019 09:57

We’re going Use the packing service.....

I suppose there’s a bit of me thinking as the house has been empty for a while there might be stuff not working like the boiler of the heating....

I’m a natural procrastinator.

Crack on and move. Smile We’re moving 16th December. Don’t want a miserable last Christmas in our current home surrounded by boxes.

Winterdaysarehere · 17/11/2019 10:01

Better an exciting first Christmas in the new house than a last one on the old. First memories will be of festivities!! Fab!!

witherwings · 17/11/2019 10:02

We moved house 3 days before Christmas once. It was great, although we did book Christmas dinner out that year.

MegaClutterSlut · 17/11/2019 10:29

I would move asap Grin

Exp1etiveDeLighted · 17/11/2019 10:34

Crack on with it, I wouldn't like an uncompleted house move hanging over Christmas.

MustardScreams · 17/11/2019 10:36

Yep definitely get it done. Moving house is a pain at the best of times, so getting it over and done with is always the way to go. It won’t be too painful if you’re using the packing service.

Hurdygurdy24 · 17/11/2019 10:37

I don’t really get why Christmas would even be a consideration in when you do something as important as move house to be honest - especially since you are talking about the second week in December.

Moving house takes a few days and Christmas is a couple of days with some extra food and maybe some friends and family visiting. Will never understand the stress personally

DragonMamma · 17/11/2019 10:38

We moved in before Christmas. Just get it done and dusted!

CatUnderTheStairs · 17/11/2019 10:41

We’ve got visitors staying for two weeks.

The house we are moving to needs redecorating and the kitchen se5 up isn’t ideal till we’ve had some work done....

Can you get a gas engineer in now to service the boiler and check the heating? I realise if everything goes wrong that will be money down the drain but I doubt that would be your biggest worry in that situation! Also I guess if any major problem shows, you could negotiate on price at this stage (if you would want to).

stoplickingthetelly · 17/11/2019 10:41

We moved in December and had a 4 yr old and 1 yr old, plus family coming to stay. It was stressful at the time, but I’m pleased we did it. We didn’t have any choice though - primary school applications closed on 15th January so we had to be in by then. I say just crack on and move.
