How much do you spend at Xmas?0

Particularly on adult children? A friend of mine had a £20 cap per present. I am tired of all the spending and materialism. My I impoverished adult children send me a list of things they would like each year which I feel takes all the joy out of it. What do you do?

Too much! I save £100 month but usually spend a bit more, 2 adult children get around £300 each

GiveHerHellFromUs · 17/11/2019 06:29

My parents probably spend about £40 per couple (we get a bag of goodies rather than big gifts these days). I probably spend around £30-40 each.

IL's spend a lot more on us - probably £80-100 on me and anything up to £500 on DP but he's an only child.

Depends what they want and what we can afford at the time. This year will be cheaper stuff as paying more on a mortgage and drop in wages.

Are they students or working? I think 50 pounds is ok for adult children. Depends on what you can afford though. My kids are younger so I spend more.

SunsetBoulevard3 · 17/11/2019 06:39

They are all very impoverished

But, how about you? What can you afford? If you’re a millionaire, I’d spoil them a bit. If you’re on a tight budget, spend what you can afford.

PH30B3 · 17/11/2019 06:59

Truthfully I spend a little less than I can afford but I shop really well throughout the year to get as much as possible for my money.
I don't have my own children but £15ish for neice and nephew and other children we may buy for. £20 for an adult but I admit I do tend to go a little more OTT on Mum shes £50 already.

CakeNinja · 17/11/2019 07:47

Well I haven’t started any shopping yet and my children are teens and 8 so not adults.
Nieces and nephews - £50 (there are about 20 of these!)
Parents and in-laws - £100
Dp - no budget in mind, just whatever I think he’ll like.
Neighbours and their dc - £50 (in total, not each)
Couple of friends - £30
Sister - £250 (booked a hotel stay for a trip)
Closest friends - £100
Dc - again, no budget but just whatever it is that they either ask for or I pick up because I know they’ll like.
Really need to get my skates on!

This year I am budgeting

£100 on a husband
£100 on my four year old including the cost of two pre planned actitivites.
£200 on family - we actually did a secret santa last year with a set budget of £100 per person which was great. I'd be happy to do this again.
£30 or so on teacher, ta and after school club staff.
£50 extra on alchohol and treat stuff.
£200 extra on nights out.

Wow that's way more than I thought.

Pogmella · 17/11/2019 09:05

I’ve been writing down what I spend on everything, food, nights out, gifts, tree etc for 3 years and although my income has gone up and down I tend to spend about 30-35% of my monthly salary. I seem to cut my cloth to fit that bracket- this year DC wants a bike so I’m spending £700 on everything and she’ll have fewer other gifts. I save about £50 a month in cash in a tin all year.

Pogmella · 17/11/2019 09:07

I started to write it down after one year when worrying about paying for it all took the joy out of it for me- there seemed so many costs I’d forgotten about. Then I worked out what to save for the next year.

RoseHippy1 · 17/11/2019 09:12

My dad spends about £40 on my and my 3 brothers (all in 30s) and our spousesz My mum spends about £10 on each of us (they’re divorced). Dad has a lot more money than mum.

Are your kids sending a list because they know you’ll be buying them something and they’d rather get a gift they actually need (as they’re poor)?
