Taking 8 week old baby swimming?

Of to centre parcs in a few weeks, baby will be 8 weeks old and won't be having his jabs till we get home... is it ok to take him swimming? If so how long for...

With DD she was 6 months before we went on holiday so never had this to think about before 😂

Yes it’s fine. You don’t need to wait for jabs anymore. Mine went at 3 weeks old

user1493413286 · 16/11/2019 16:28

Yes it’s fine but get a body suit rather than a swim suit as it’ll keep him warmer and take him out when he starts getting cold, probs 20-30 minutes. My DD actually fell asleep on me the first time I took her ad it tired her out

HJWT · 16/11/2019 17:02

@user1493413286 I know the pool is very warm i think its around 29c so not to worried about that were as our local pool is always cold 😂

Thanks both 😁

When we went to cp we took a rucksack with couple of towels, spare clothes, bottles in ff, nappies etc so if you need anything it’s all there so not faffing with going back to changing room.

That is not warm!!! Especially not for a baby. The baby won't be swimming or moving around like you or an older child would normally be.

We were told to wait for jabs, but that was 10 years ago.

Sidge · 19/11/2019 20:35

You don’t have to wait for their jabs.

29 degrees is definitely not warm, especially for a very young baby. Body temperature is about 37 degrees so they will get cold very quickly.

You’ll probably only be in there about ten to fifteen minutes.

NeverGotMyPuppy · 19/11/2019 20:47

Yep as others have said you really want to avoid anything below 30 but she should be ok as long as you keep it short and make sure she is wearing a suit.

Pinkflipflop85 · 19/11/2019 20:48

That pool is not warm!Shock it should be at least 32. Anything under 30 is a hypothermia risk.

Userzzzzz · 19/11/2019 20:50

At that age you’ll be lucky if you manage 10 minutes. I was cold last time I went swimming there. My 8m old still only just manages 25-30 minutes in a 30-31 degree pool with a wetsuit. A lot depends on air temp as well.

HJWT · 19/11/2019 22:36

@Userzzzzz really I always feel really hot when we go there! The first time we took DD swimming was there and she didn't seem to get cold! Obviously very different with a new baby !

Yeah you'll only be in about 10 mins with a baby that age and pool that temperature. And agree that you should get the full body wetsuit too. 29 degrees isn't that warm - at our swimming lessons, lessons were cancelled if the temp was 29 or below.

AintNobodyHereButUsChickens · 19/11/2019 22:43

Yep get a wetsuit, will keep her much warmer. We took DS swimming without one when he was tiny, pool felt warm to us but within minutes he was blue and shivering! Had to take him straight out. We got a wetsuit for him and next time we went he could enjoy it because he was much warmer!

JJSS123 · 19/11/2019 22:46

Took our 6 month old to cp at the beginning of the month and even I thought the pool was FREEZING baby was okay in a long sleeve wet suit but didn’t keep him in for long and had lots of towels. I took my changing bag into the pool area at CPS with no problem and also found one of them towels you get for kids abroad with the good thing on really useful. I still personally wouldn’t take a young baby swimming without jabs. So many kids in there all from schools and can carry all kinds of germs. We all had a bad cold coming back from CPs. (Center parcs) x x

JJSS123 · 19/11/2019 22:47

Hood thing

Indella · 19/11/2019 22:52

Babies under 3 months old shouldn’t be in a pool colder than 32 degrees, they can’t regulate their temperature very well and can develop hypothermia. 29 is too cold for an 8 week old baby.

thatguiltyfeeling · 19/11/2019 22:54

We took our baby into a pool that was 30degrees and it was way too cold, but before jabs is fine to take baby swimming

Florencenotflo · 19/11/2019 23:10

We took Dd when she was 3 months old. It took us longer to get changed for swimming and changed at the end than we actually spent in the pool 😂

It warm but not warm enough for little ones to spend any great length of time in.

Take them by all means , but don't expect to be in there very long. A bit of a splash and a few photos and that's it really. Oh and they are usually starving when they come out so have a bottle or boob ready!

Florencenotflo · 19/11/2019 23:10

That was Elvedon but I've been to the others and they are all around the same temp.

RachelEllenR · 19/11/2019 23:13

We took our 5 week old in a pool that's cooler than center Parcs with a wrap and she lasted about 15 mins. Which CP are you going to? The baby pool and main pool are both pretty warm and take two towels for the baby so you can wrap them up and watch the others swim and have a dry one if you go back in.

Mine were nearer 5 months when we went to center Parcs for the first time with them and it was fine.

Userzzzzz · 19/11/2019 23:15

Indella That rings a bell. My baby wasn’t allowed to start water babies until 12 weeks as our pool wasn’t a hydrotherapy one. I’ve also had my lessons finish early as my teacher wasn’t happy with my daughter’s colour. It’s so easy for them to get cold.

HJWT I think it must depend on when you go. I’m sure I did a jan/feb and it was definitely on the colder side. I run cold though and was naively imagining something more tropical.

AforEffort9 · 20/11/2019 13:39

I wouldn't. Babies can't regulate their temperature and really, at such a young age, will they get anything out of it?
