Job 1
Round the corner from home.
Only started a month ago but
Colleagues aren't really friendly but not horrible either. I'm not really enjoying it tbh.
A lot of juggling around with kids / dh work / planning etc as I get home for 5.30.
Great local government pension scheme and generous annual Leave.

Job 2
Slightly less hours and more money. Fte would mean pay rise of 5k. I would work pt
Job is working from home but would need to go to evening meeting every fortnight and one Saturday a month which is very local to me anyway.
Crap pension and not much annual Leave.

Which one?!

With job 1 even though it has a good pension I don't know how long I'll even be working there (not many years I don't think) so thinking about it im not sure that's even a positive!?

How old are you, i.e. how many years until you need that pension?

Does the part-time nature make up for reduced holiday, for example will you have non-working days each week that mean you don't have to take annual leave to cover school holidays etc?

smalando · 16/11/2019 10:17

I'm 40.
Both jobs are part time with the 2nd being slightly less hours with more money!

Go with the second option and pay more into your pension.

SuperMeerkat · 16/11/2019 12:52

I would personally never go self employed. Too risky and I like the fact my employer pays so much into my pension as well (NHS)

smalando · 16/11/2019 20:31

SuperMeerkat i wouldn't be self employed. I would still be employed but just a crap pension. But tbh I don't think my pension would even be worth anything at the end of it.

Go for the new job and pay more into your pension yourself.

SciFiScream · 16/11/2019 21:09

Pension and good annual leave would win it for me.

Add in the value of your pension to job 1. Does job 2 still come out with more money?

misspiggy19 · 16/11/2019 21:11

Job 2 without a doubt.

mellicauli · 16/11/2019 21:13

How old are your children?

Hecateh · 16/11/2019 21:46

My work based pension aren't worth much at all

BUT

I will be able to just about exist on the state pension (only 14 months to go) so my 2 small work pensions - really worth naff all - £200 per month - that £200 is 100% of my disposable income.

smalando · 16/11/2019 23:28

I think im going with job 2. In order to get any pension with job 1 I'd have to work with them for the rest of my life and I'm not prepared to do that.
