Kitchen design - colours, please save me from myself!

I think I need the wisdom of mumsnet please before I drive myself and every other family member mad! I posted this in Property/DIY but got no replies so trying again!

Currently planning a much awaited new kitchen but can't decide on colour. I know it's a first world problem but we won't be able to afford to do it again any time soon and I don't want to get it wrong!

Choices are (all handleless):

  • Light grey gloss (is really a very light grey)
  • Cashmere gloss
  • New to the list (as I looked at Pinterest for too long) Light grey matt

Kitchen is 6 meters by 5 metres and has 2 windows but never gets extremely bright but is fine with spot lights on.

What does everyone think and for your preferred option what colour worktop would you have? If anyone has any 'done' pictures they can share that would be wonderful but if not just an opinion please!

Also I make it more complicated as I try to work out what colour walls I was thinking with Cashmere unit's the walls might have to be all white but if we went grey units I would quite like one wall an interesting blue and others white. I have zero artistic flare or ability to imagine it done though and am going backwards and forwards driving us all crazy.

So mumsnetters with more imagination and artistic flare than me, please help!

When we had ours designed the designer showed us all manner of colour options on her CAD system. There's lots of options shown on her Houzz pro page that might give you some ideas .Shes under OnePlan on there.

My kitchen is being delivered tomorrow! Went with white matt units and pale worktop, our kitchen is quite dark.
Mid grey on the floor.

I'm going to go all out on wall paint and accessories though. Paint and handles and blinds are easier to switch up when I want a change. Even replacing countertops isn't too expensive.

I am fairly boring and sensible though....

BIWI · 17/11/2019 14:46

White is the only 'safe' option! Any colour will date. We've just had ours done, and it's Farrow & Ball Hague Blue.

Personally I think cashmere was born dated!

How long are you planning on staying there?
Unless you’re doing it up to sell, I really would just choose what you like.

Get a sample door though. I love Oskwood grey, but in my kitchen it goes beige, particularly on one wall and it would look mismatched and I don’t like it.

ChippingIn · 17/11/2019 14:56

@BIWI

It looks fabulous! Well worth the mess & hassle!!

I’m still looking for what I want 🙄🙄

Lidlfix · 17/11/2019 14:57

Cashmere handle less , black corian worktops, white tiles teal feature walls.

I want a new kitchen but everything appears very gloss / cream / grey. I have decided that until I find something I love, I will manage. I don't want to choose between 2 designs which are just nice

Comefromaway · 17/11/2019 15:01

My kitchen is cream. I had it done 10 years ago and I don’t think it’s dated at all. We are moving house and all the ones we have looked at I’ve found that cream is still classic.

BlueJava · 17/11/2019 15:38

Mostly cream with white - then I've accessorized with teal. I like it because it can easily be changed without major work.

These are all lovely. Thanks so much for all the pictures everyone, it is so appreciated.

I am really enjoying seeing them.

Anyone go for white gloss?

My daughter has gloss white with white quartz worktops. I have cream gloss with black quartz worktops. Still looks fresh after ten years

shouldntBeButIAm · 17/11/2019 20:50

@cornstarch is your daughter happy with hers?

Ok I just says the words 'white gloss' to DH. He thinks not apparently. Back to light grey or cashmere gloss Hmm

Grey is defo a dated look now. Though obviously those who have put in a grey kitchen in recent years will disagree.

I’d go for the cashmere if I was you.

Personally I love black units, but these would no doubt date badly. Fortunately we are not planning to do our kitchen for another couple of years, so I’ve plenty of time to mull it over!

reluctantbrit · 17/11/2019 22:04

We have a very pale cream wood cabinets, white walls and a blac/blue granite worktop.

Don’t do gloss unless you always want to wipe down surfaces.

I do like grey but only if it is matched with some sort of colour which is not grey, black, white or blue.

What are your plans with the house? If you want to stay long term it may not matter if it is fashionable if you like it. If you plan to sell medium term you may want to go for something which is more lasting.

IncrediblySadToo · 17/11/2019 22:20

As do the retailers who are still selling more grey than anything else.

One persons traditional/classic is another persons dated.

I honestly think it matters very little because everything ‘dates’ - in that there are tell tales about when a kitchen was new

Choosing a kitchen that looks well put together & suits the house is the most important thing

Plus one you love! Unless you’re about to put the house straight on the market, choose one that makes YOU happy 🌷

@Landlubber2019. I’m not prepared to take the risk of their shitty after sales ‘care’ so I’m not using them myself, but Wren has the most fantastic range of colours and textures. If you’re brave colour wise they’d be very tempting. They’re definitely worth a look for inspiration if nothing else

@reluctantbrit I’m staying away from gloss (& handless) for exactly that reason! I don’t want to spend all my time wiping finger prints off the doors.

My kitchen is cream with stainless steel fittings, huge fridge freezer. Slate worktops and a oak covered island

We have marble tiles in white on 3 walls and the rest is painted Ammonite (farrow and ball). It’s a huge space so can take all the tones. I love itasiys not on trend rather it’s smart and I think classic.

shouldntBeButIAm · 18/11/2019 14:35

Thanks all.

Still grey or cashmere here after DH's reaction to white! Confused

Still no decisive decision on my part.

We had ivory gloss in our old kitchen and never noticed finger marks but maybe that was because it was a light colour?

For those asking, we have absolutely no plans to move. Not been in the house that long and very much plan to be here 20 years plus. It's why I'm so nervous about picking something that I like and doesn't date too much as I suspect it will be a VERY long time before we do it again, if ever!

DH said to me when we ordered a new bookcase that we should get a good one as it will probably be the last one we ever buy!!! Cheerful!
