Hello, my daughter had her 8 week jabs at 11 o’clock today. She has been ok but since 4- very unsettled and won’t let me put her down.
She is warm to touch but the thermometer saying ok.
I’m confused by the calpol advice: 3 doses every 5 hours apart after the jabs, no more than 3 times in 24 hours, for 2 days.
So she’s had 2 doses, I could give the third around 9pm then nothing overnight and start again tomorrow? Won’t her temp raise overnight?

From the nhs leaflet:

Is it OK for small babies to have paracetamol?

Paracetamol is approved for managing fever in children from the age of two months. The patient information leaflet that comes with the pack may say that children aged two to three months should only be given two doses before talking to a doctor or pharmacist. Although paracetamol is safe in very young children, the advice on the packaging is there to avoid parents giving paracetamol to a child with an unexplained fever. Such a fever could be a sign of a serious infection and treating this for too long may delay a parent seeking medical help.

As fever after vaccination is common, however, experts have advised that it is OK to give paracetamol for up to 48 hours after the MenB vaccine without seeking medical advice. Fever in this time period is much more likely to be caused by the vaccine than by an infection.

The paracetamol will also make your child feel better, and there is no risk of an over-dose provided you give no more than four 2.5ml doses in any 24 hour period.

Dose!!! Not does Grin

It's the Men B one that causes fever and why paracetamol is advised

Sorry I’m trying to read everything but she was screaming and it was stressful. She’s calming down and her temp is in the green again so maybe that was the peak of the fever. I’ll give her one more dose tonight but leave it go as long as we can with her being calm and this temp

Officially it’s not a fever until over 38, but I personally wouldn’t worry until 39 or very symptomatic. If her temp is 37.8 at the mo she is probably uncomfortable but not technically ‘feverish’, although we’re all different so this might be very high for her. Sounds like you’re doing all the right things (skin to skin etc) so just keep going and hope for a restful night! Smile

You are told specifically to ignore the usual advice of 2 doses and give three after the 8 week jabs.

I hope you have a settled night, OP. I'd recommend an in ear thermometer if you don't have one, rather than a forehead sensor. My doctor husband was of the opinion that ear ones are more accurate.

Shookethtothecore · 15/11/2019 20:30

Yes it’s an ear one I have. It’s the braaun one, she’s peacefully sleeping on my chest with a temp of 38 but calm so I’m holding off for a bit and monitoring. She is actually my third child but a have a bit of an age gap and these ear thermometers are soooo much better. Thank you everyone. I feel calmer

We have a Braun one too! Aww, enjoy your cuddle, hope she goes down well Smile

I had to give 4 doses. Advice seems to vary. The nurse at the 8w jabs told me to give 4 if needed. A different one at the next lot said that technically I should have called 111 as she still had a fever but then said they’d most likely say it was the vaccine and to give another dose. So it seems like the official advice is 3 but 4 isn’t uncommon.
