Poor ds has an awful cold and cough. Got up and went to get the Calpol. Gave him the standard dose (7.5ml) He said urgh mummy what flavour is it? And I realised it wasn't the Calpol but the orange flavour ibuprofen.

He's nearly 3 (and big if that makes a difference) at 3 the dose is 5ml. But at 2 it's 2.5ml and I've given him bloody 7.5.

Do I need to do anything?

I really dont know I would Ring 111 for advice

IVEgotthesparklersBIATCH · 15/11/2019 05:08

111 definitely

SofiaAmes · 15/11/2019 05:12

Ring 111 but don't worry. My ds was frequently prescribe 10ml doses of ibuprofen at that age (and he wasn't big) as the lower doses didn't work. It's not something you should give without a medical professional's advice, but highly unlikely to harm your child.

I doubt it’s an issue, they don’t leave a direct line between alive and dead when prescribing doses. But yes I would call non emergency help and stay awake tonight to monitor him

Sparrowlegs248 · 15/11/2019 05:17

He's in bed with me. I've just messaged a friend who said it's prescribed by weight in hospital, so it would be fine. He's 17kg at last weighing. Bigger than some of ds1 4 yr old friends.

Stupid thing is, I picked the bottle up, in the dark and shop it and thought it seemed "thinner" than usual (,the liquid).

I would still check with non emergency services, these doses also rely on how much has been eaten or drunk recently. On an empty stomach they can have more impact. Always better to be safe OP

newmumwithquestions · 15/11/2019 05:30

It’s fine. Well I mean it’s not ideal but it won’t harm him as a 1 off.
I wouldn’t bother with 111. They will take you through a load of questions then be ambiguous then you might get a medical call back to ask you the same questions and tell you it’s fine.

I have been told to increase dose on an occasion by my GP. That was for my DC who was 4 at the time (and much less than 17 kg).

ExhaustedFlamingo · 15/11/2019 05:36

If he weighs 17kg he's actually in the dosage range for 7.5ml anyway so you're totally fine.

Obviously the bottles play it safe but hospitals usually administer by weight. I'll try and add a screenshot to show you but confirmation re weight dose can be found here: emedicine.medscape.com/article/2172401-overview

Also, there was a previous MN post about this ages ago, and she did the same as you but gave her younger child even more (10ml). 111 told her fine. Absolutely fine, no need to stress or call anyone.

As a poster above said, it is prescribed by weight and it is blood concentrations that matter. You just need to make sure not to exceed the 24 hour maximum dose (so give him 2.5 ml next as opposed to 5).

RLOU30 · 15/11/2019 05:37

What age is on the bottle ? My Ibuprofen says DS can have 5ml at his age (18 months)

Sparrowlegs248 · 15/11/2019 05:40

Thank you. The friend I messaged is a nurse so was reassured. Hadnt planned on messaging her but notoced she wa online so that was helpful.

I'm loathe to call 111, at this time, as I know it would be 100s of mostly irrelevant questions and I'd end up with 1 if not both children awake for the day (light sleepers)

Off to read the thread linked, thank you. Minor moment of panic over!

Update, DS is fine, had a lay in, and has got up and had breakfast and sone milk so hopefully that will help ward off any tummy effects.
