My job only exists in London

I see this all the time on threads. Unless you're the Prime Minister, Queen, keeper of the ravens at the tower, a genuine pearly queen or jellied eel and pie and mash slinger, I reckon that's utter bollox.

There may be more opportunities within your chosen career in London but outside very specific roles, your job does not only exist in London.

If you've never seen anyone suggesting a spa-day or numerous ways with a chicken Tiddler, you've really not been looking very hard. Similarly here, it's said all the bloody time.

I've never seen anyone start a thread saying they hate London and can't understand why anyone would live and work there. I've seen it said, but never as an opener. I've already said I'm fond of London, I think it's a great city.

I've no beef whatsoever with where people chose to live, do what you please, I'm certainly not questioning anyone's decision to live in London.

I’d love to see my Dh’s job available in London. He specialises in a very skilled sector of the nuclear industry. I’d love to see you power crazed lot put up with a nuclear power station slap bang in the middle of the city where most of the power usage comes from. So no, his job doesn’t exist at all in London but it is pretty specific to his power station. His is the only PWR station in the country so although he could transfer a broad range of skills he couldn’t do his exact job somewhere else. Kind of the opposite of being stuck in London. Thank god.

It's not goady, I'm not London bashing, and I'm not telling anyone they're wrong.

Whatever your career is Tiddler, I hope it's not one which requires any nuance in communucation.

And I think I satisfied my original question whilst stimulating lively discussion. So I'm pleased enough with that.

No I'm not. I'm really not. If that's your take, that's something for you to think about, not me. I've 'demanded' nowt, it's not compulsory to reply to threads.

If I wanted to be goady I might have posted something like, 'I think people are very limited in their thinking and is it possible that opportunities are so plentiful in London that mediocre people can be very successful there'.

But I didn't.

I'm not policing anyone's choices, your take is very strange, and I've repeatedly said I like London. I don't know why you keep wilfully ignoring what I'm actually saying. Aarrggghh.

Anyway, we're just about to arrive at out friends' house, so I'm buggering off for the rest of the weekend. Tiddler, I hope you have a splendid one, I like your tenacity.

It is pretty goady to demand information from anyone who doesn't agree with you, and then argue the toss with them. Because clearly you know more about their careers than they do. Hmm

Also it's not always that easy to move from a specialised role into a different industry, even with transferable skills. It took me a long time to do it, and I had to constantly explain to recruiters what I did and how my experience was relevant to other roles. People with easily identifiable skills and experience are more likely to be considered, i.e. if someone who works as a data analyst for Bank A applies for a data analyst position at Bank B. The person from the niche industry may have data analysis experience but the context is not as obvious, and their job title could be quite different. It's really not that hard to get pigeonholed.
