Xmas charity jumper campaigns ..wasteful?

Is there not enough waste? Buy another jumper, then throw it out come spring? Aren't there better ways to fund charities?

I’ve been wearing the same £10 primark jumper for 8 years Grin

nitgel · 14/11/2019 20:23

I bought one last year and it shrank

RJnomore1 · 14/11/2019 20:23

Yeah I bought a tesco jumper at least 6 years ago, comes out every winter.

Theimpossiblegirl · 14/11/2019 20:24

Our pta does a second hand jumper stall, which I think is a great idea. They do the same leading up to world book day with fancy dress.

PickAChew · 14/11/2019 20:26

I just put mine away, the same as my summer shorts that get about 3 days' wear.

I've bought DS1 a new one, this year, but he's grown out of his old one, which I took to the charity shop, this afternoon.

Pimmsypimms · 14/11/2019 20:27

I've been wearing the same primark jumper too pp! Not as dedicated as you though as only had mine for 5 years Grin
I did pick up a lovely one at a car boot sale earlier on this year for £1.50, so looking forward to shaking things up his Christmas!
They always have them in the charity shops this time of year op, so you don't always have to buy new.

Crawley65 · 14/11/2019 20:27

Buy one in a charity shop. I saw a whole tail of them yesterday for a few pounds each.

Ouchmyleg · 14/11/2019 20:28

I think a swap shop is a great idea!

marshmallowss · 14/11/2019 20:29

But from a charity shop. Re use the one you have bought in previous years. Then make a donation?

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 14/11/2019 20:31

I have had one for years - I hate seeing the shops full of Christmas clothes and decorations (tablecloths, ornaments etc) that are cheap and disposable (or theme of the year - so I’m expecting rainbows, mermaids and unicorn father/mother/non specific parental figure Christmas this year) so won’t be kept for another year.

When we go to the states it’s usually after 4th of July so the stores are full of discounted Stars and Stripes everything and raring to go with Halloween, thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas and kwanza themed everything. It’s just seems so wasteful.

1hamwich4 · 14/11/2019 20:32

This is really simple. Either: don’t take part, or use a second hand one. You only wear it for a day, or possibly an hour or so just to show willing and get a photo, so an acrylic monster would do the job.

When I became a teacher it was obvious that I was going to have at least one Xmas jumper day a year, so I got on eBay and bought a second hand jumper with a design I actually liked. Before I got that I simply pinned a few baubles and a bit of tinsel to a plain green jumper. Shoved them back on the tree when I got home and bingo- zero waste.

Not everything novelty has to be disposable tat...

soupmaker · 14/11/2019 20:33

I've managed to have a very happy life without the inclusion of a Christmas jumper. Just don't buy one. Kids jumpers been passed down and done each kid at least 3 years.

lolaflores · 14/11/2019 20:38

I think charities shouldn't be adding to the levels of xmas tat. And they wouldn't be pushing them if they didnt think people wont buy them, even if many people keep the same one for years.

I haven't ever bought one. My daughters have 1 each they have used for 4 years and hopefully will continue to use.

I got a few for DD on ebay. I won’t be getting one this year as I’m pregnant and don’t see the point.

If I do participate next year I’ll get a second hand one otherwise it is just wasteful

lolaflores · 14/11/2019 20:39

What I mean is I have seen campaigns by charities selling xmas jumpers. Focus Ireland was one and the other one was online and I think it was a kids charity.
I dont mean wearing one for a charity.

OP posts:
Sneeeeeeze · 14/11/2019 20:41

I do agree with you though! Although they don’t specifically say to buy a New one just wear one or customise one

1hamwich4 · 14/11/2019 20:42

I see what you’re saying, but turn it on its head- given that a certain amount of tat is currently inevitable, isn’t it a little bit positive if a charity benefits?

lolaflores · 14/11/2019 20:44

I know they will filter back to a charity somehow, but there must be less wasteful ideas.

OP posts:
Autumnfresh · 14/11/2019 20:46

I don’t know anyone who throws their Christmas jumpers out. Everyone takes great pride in reusing it or giving it away.

lolaflores · 14/11/2019 20:51

But people do throw them away Autumnfresh else the charity shops wouldn't be full of them as are the shops and now the charity's are flogging them

1FootInTheRave · 14/11/2019 20:53

I wear mine the whole of December 😳

The kids ones that no longer fit are sent to chazza shop, next size up is purchased from chazza shops also.

Can't be more economical than that, unless you'd prefer me to knit from santas beard cast offs? #cantknitforshit

1hamwich4 · 15/11/2019 06:42

....so the problem is really people being wasteful by chucking stuff out, rather than any particular special event, no?

In which case we should be trying to make “make do and mend” more fashionable.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 15/11/2019 07:32

It’s not just the jumpers - I’ve had one for years and DS has passed his one to his cousin.

It’s all the Christmas (And other seasonal/holiday) themed ‘stuff’ in stores - home decorations, dining sets, bedding, clothes... things that you won’t use all year round and may well end up in landfill as they aren’t ‘fashionable’ next year or you get fed up tripping over a box of Christmas stuff in the garage. The pound shops are groaning with cheap Christmas items that won’t last until new year.

People discuss how they are going to decorate their trees - what a whole new set of decoration? What happens to last years baubles and lights?

I really think we all buy too much stuff.

ScreamingCosArgosHaveNoRavens · 15/11/2019 07:34

Customising an existing jumper is the way to go, if you don't think you'll get the wear out of a bespoke one.

kjhkj · 15/11/2019 07:35

Its incredibly wasteful. Its one thing if you're an adult who has stopped growing and will wear the same one every year but for children who grow so quickly its such a waste and it makes me really cross that schools encourage it.
