Which iPad model and what's the difference between Wifi and Cellular?

I'm clueless, but need to find a refurbished iPad for 12 year old DD.

Is iPad 6 a reasonable one to go for? Would Air or Air 2 be better?

If it's Wifi only, does that mean that she wouldn't be able to use it in the car?

I don't know anything about iPads! Thanks

if its wifi only then she could use it in the car, she would just have to download games and tv beforehand. It depends on your price range which one you go for (have a look on musicmagpie), and you can see the differences between air 1 and 2 here

Cellular means it's mobile, basically a giant smart phone. You would need some sort of contract for 4G.

We've only ever had non-cellular and it's never been an issue. Most places have WiFi you can use and if we want to watch films or shows we download them before we go out.

Ah, great, thanks!

Are Airs better than iPad 6th generation? I've read so many websites, but am still confused. Thanks again

You can also ‘hotspot’ the Wi-fi ones to your mobile if you need to use data on the go and there isn’t secure Wi-fi available.

The Airs are lower spec as well as older. iPad 6 is from 2016, Air 2 was 2014.

iPad 6 is 2018, sorry typo! Anyway, Airs are old and slow now - I've got one of each, and the 2 is a kitchen tablet.

I don’t know what mine is, I got it on contract this year but it definitely has WiFi and 4G as I can use it away from home.

If I want Internet access on my (ancient) ipad I setup my (ancient) iphone as a hotspot and connect via Bluetooth.

You'll need a data plan to use cellular, I just tether my WiFi tablet through my smartphone, as I don't want to pay twice.

Just bought an iPad mini 5. Along the way discovered that WiFi only does not have a gps chip. WiFi+Cellular does. It works even with no cellular activated (sim/Payg/contract). Without god chip it’s not really possible to use it as eg sat nav or use some apps which rely on gps (some features of maps/vessel finder/flight tracker etc).

The WiFi only model does have some gps ‘capability’ but eg in maps it may be updated only every minute or so and be rather inaccurate. Thethering WiFi only mini iPad to eg smart phone to use iPhones cellular data doesn’t provide reliable gps either !

Lots of discussion online about this and some wishing they had known before buying WiFi only.

WiFi+cellular obvs more expensive but saves the need to plug in/download expensive external gps etc.
