Would you expect to be in agony days after abscess drained?

Cousin had peri anal abscess (yikes!) which required surgical drainage a few days ago.

She's having aftercare from local nurse, think it's daily wound packing. She says it's still agony. Is this normal after abscess drainage? I feel terrible because I said 'oh once it's drained you'll get immediate relief'.

Obviously the wound has to heal but shouldn't she be feeling much more comfortable three days post op? I'm worried about her.

Yes. Bad news but the pain will be present for quite a few weeks. It has to heal from the inside out so the surgical packing will be in place until that happens! I remember having surgical packing changed daily and it felt like sandpaper on raw skin so your cousin has my sympathies.

Yes as with PP it's so so painful for a while after. Your poor cousin has my sympathy.

It just sounds so awful, and in such a ghastly place too. Hope it heals soon. They've given her tramadol which probably brings its own problems too.

Does anyone remember how long the packing went on for?

I had my op on New Year’s Eve and I think I was finally fully healed mid-March. My abscess was about the size of a plum if that helps?

MorrisZapp · 14/11/2019 18:22

Christ bunnyhop! I can only imagine that absolutely wasn't the kind of plum you were hoping to enjoy over the festive season, how utterly rubbish that must have been for you. Poor wee thing.

It was horrid but it’s all a distant memory lol

Mine was painful for a while. I didn't have a lot of pain when it was being packed.

I had mine done in September and it was healed in January but I have been left with scarring. How long it takes will depend on how deep the wound is, infection, health of patient.

Some advice.

*Finding a dressing that fits well in that area and doesn't fall off is a nightmare. I found a really good tegaderm one which was shaped and stayed on. They were really stingy with dressings and were issuing 5 at a time when I was using two a day. Insist on getting a decent dressing.

*I used to use cotton swabs to put over the dressing in my knickers to keep it in place.

*I also wore very attractive big knickers.

*In the early days, if the packing falls out they'll need to get it redone as it can start sealing over fairly quickly. Some nurses got really shitty about this.

*If the dressing/packing is being dislodged or getting wet when going to the toilet, hold a sanitary towel or a wad of loo roll over it.

*I used to have a wash/shower immediately before my packing appointment so it didn't matter if the packing fell out as it was being dressed.

*They told me not to use anything perfumed so I used water wipes to keep clean.

*Be watchful of any signs of infection. The nurses do keep an eye on this.

*Lots of protein is good for healing. I also had supplements, can't remember if it was D or E they recommended.

*I was off work for 6 weeks and spent a lot of time resting. They need to keep the pressure off the wound to aid healing so I spent a lot of time on my side.

*My GP was really vague about time off work but the nurses said the longer I rested and didn't sit on the wound all day the better.

I found it quite traumatic and intrusive. No one really explained how long the process would be in hospital. It was only the district nurse that was realistic about healing time.

I felt really vulnerable in the early days.

Thank you so much theaudience. Gives me a really good understanding of what she's going through. I'll pass on all your brilliant advice.

Yes I had one when I was 18. Had it done under a general anaesthetic and packing for around 8 weeks as far as I can remember. It was very painful. Hard to sit in a way that didn’t hurt etc
Actually had it done right before my a levels yikes.
I remember it being v painful, especially when having the packing done. The pain does wear off although like me she might be left with a scar and a bit of tenderness for a while.

I had an abscess on my back, best location to have one, if you are going to have it, iykwim Blush Confused easy to cover up, accessible with a tank top

Mine was quite deep, wound dressing was twice a day for three weeks, once a day for another four weeks , and then physio for a year due to loss of range if motion in the shoulder

MrsJBaptiste · 15/11/2019 12:52

I had two anal abcessess within 3 weeks but had different experiences with both.

The first felt fine after a couple of days of packing but the abscess hadn't been sorted out properly and the pain and lump returned after two weeks and back into surgery I went.

The second op was much better and then made a much bigger cut to access the abscess and after 4-5 days of packing I felt loads better and was back at work feeling completely normal.
