What to wear in New York atm?

Am unsure about how cold it will be? Has anyone been this time of year?

I was thinking our usual warm jackets with layers underneath, hat and gloves and comfy trainers for the walking.

My friend is horrified and says we'll freeze! She thinks thick socks/heavy boots and thermal underwear is what we need. Thus seems an awful faff for going in and out of places. Surely when we're walking we'll heat up a bit anyway?

Today there it’s -3 and snowing

bluemonkeydots · 14/11/2019 14:36

Is it Shock what's the best weather forecast to follow? It says on my app 2°c and dry.

Cold in NY is COLD. No idea why but feels worse. And you'll be out and about a lot.

I follow a cat rescue place based in NYC and they posted that there's an arctic blast brining record breaking cold temperatures. So thermals and heavy soles shoes/boots.

Plump82 · 14/11/2019 14:39

bringing and soled

bluemonkeydots · 14/11/2019 14:41

So do you think long thermal top (primark one prob) jumper, padded north face coat, hat and gloves and walking boots will do? (Though not being very stylish) or should I be looking at more heavy duty gear?

I wouldn't wear trainers. Your feet will e soaked in 5 mins with snow, slush and rain combo.

Your clothing is probably ok. Your might want some tights under jeans if cold.

LaurieFairyCake · 14/11/2019 14:52

Not more heavy duty - the second you walk in a shop you will boil.

I put off going in places as taking a heavy coat, scarf, gloves off and carrying them was such a massive faff.

I'd rather be colder walking and go in and out places more ...

bluemonkeydots · 14/11/2019 15:00

I'm glad I asked now, bloody boots will take up most of the baggage allowance 🙈 unless we can all put up with wearing them on the flight.

OP posts:
Caspianberg · 14/11/2019 15:06

I would just wear them on the flight. You can take them off on plane when sitting down anyway

Expressedways · 14/11/2019 15:09

The artic blast is pretty much done after today (thank god!) and I think the forecast for the weekend/next week is fairly warm at roughly between 5 and 10 degrees Celsius. I would wear what you suggest in your OP but I’d also take some footwear that is ok for rain. If you’d been there early this week you would have needed the thermals but thankfully you’ve timed your trip perfectly so I’d leave them at home!

JollyAndBright · 14/11/2019 15:11

Top tip.

Pack some ballet pumps or better yet some folable slippers or thick slippers socks into your handbag, wear the boots to board and pretty much immediately take them off and switch to the slippers/pumps from your bag.

I do this whenever we go somewhere where I need boots/heavy shoes.

I would definitely recommend thermals for NYC in November.

Katrinawaves · 14/11/2019 15:13

I go to NY a lot for work and between November and April I always take a set of silk long johns and long sleeved silk top to wear under my clothes. As others have said it can be bitter. I once arrived on a Thursday to 6 inches of snow and -5 temps and left on Monday in a T shirt at 20 so things can change very very quickly!

I’d wear your boots to the airport but pack a pair of light travel slippers to wear on board the flight. I do this whenever I travel - they take up no room and are so comfy.

Have a great time - NY is my favourite city in the world.

Tereskova · 14/11/2019 15:16

It’s not snowing (at least not in Manhattan) and it’s +3C

I’m at the playground with the kids, wearing jeans, a wool jumper, puffa jacket, scarf and trainers. It’s not super cold. Kids have hats on but refused mittens so far (they’re pretty good at wearing them when their hands get cold)

How long are you staying? It’s supposed to be dry until Monday, so thick sock with trainers are fine.

Katinski · 14/11/2019 15:19

and remember, stores are HOT but you can leave your coats etc. in a locker. You'll be given a ticket for reclaim.

NotChrisTarrant · 14/11/2019 15:21

I went for thanksgiving last year and it was cold

I was wearing: a thermal skin top, a scarf, wool tights, jeans, a scarf and a big puffer jacket. I also had socks and fur lined boots.

It was more the wind than anything. Bitter, right through to your bones.

On thanksgiving we went to the parade and it was -6.

NotChrisTarrant · 14/11/2019 15:22

Eh I was wearing a jumper. I said scarf twice.

bluemonkeydots · 14/11/2019 19:57

Thanks everyone, very helpful!

The tip about changing boots for slippers on the plane is genius as well.

Great thread as are off to NY beginning of January. Anyone know whether Dubarry boots will be ok? Or are snow boots a better idea?

I’ll definitely be doing the changing boots idea. Brilliant.

AlwaysCheddar · 15/11/2019 07:25

But it’s not a damp cold so won’t feel like it would if it was -3 here. There’s very little snow and it gets cleared away quickly.

Milomonster · 15/11/2019 07:41

I was there last Christmas and the weather was beautiful. Yes, it was cold but not Arctic cold. Clear blue sky for most of the week - rained for a day. Check weather forecast nearer the time.

Melvinsmum · 15/11/2019 07:52

We flew out on 28 Nov last year, like you thinking it would be freezing and armed with new thermals.

To be fair, they had had a very cold thanksgiving with snow the week before but the weather warmed up for us. So it does very much depend on what is happening with the weather whilst you are there.

We had one very cold day when we definitely needed thermals but otherwise a decent jumper, fleecy jacket and outer raincoat surficed, same as I wear here on a cold day. Plus hat, scarf, gloves.

We wore trainers or short boots with normal socks and were fine.

The coldest we got was when going on the boat ride to the statue, don’t underestimate how cold the boat rides will be with the wind.

I think try and get a feel for the forecast before you go, my DH was monitoring predicted Temps for days ahead. I bought cheap thermal vests from Peacocks but my young adult kids were happy with just an extra t-shirt or shirt under a jumper.

Melvinsmum · 15/11/2019 07:59

I wouldn't wear trainers. Your feet will e soaked in 5 mins with snow, slush and rain combo.

But that only applies if you have snow etc when there!!! We had one wet day out of 7 and just took the subway that day. I wore M&S short leather boots and DH and kids wore trainers. We own and wear walking boots at home but didn’t take them.

It really does depend on the weather when you are there!

amusedbush · 15/11/2019 08:24

I was there last November and it was bitterly cold. Thanksgiving day was -18 celcius with wind chill and I almost cried walking down the street Blush

The cold in NYC will chill you to the bone, it's not like cold here!
