Is anyone doing/done an Open Uni degree?

Hi everyone. I cannot find anywhere else to put this thread so I've put it on Chat! I hope nobody minds?

Just wondering whether any of yous have done/doing an open uni course? After failing my final year at uni... It was intentional. I was not enjoying the course whatsoever. It wasn't what I was interested in and I still think back and wonder why the hell I did it but you live and learn! I've decided to enrol on an HND course with Open Uni then do a top up course.

Has anybody managed to do this with a family and found it doable? Did you do it via Student Finance? I am excited but worried at the same time! I am going to give it my all. There's a "mathematical" subject involved and I am terrible (disgraceful, in fact!) at maths... am I pushing my luck?! I can do it, right?! [santa]

If you only failed your final year can’t you apply for accreditation of prior learning? Or is it a completely new subject and names degree you want?

I did an open degree, I was already a trained nurse so I just topped up my nursing diploma to a degree. It was hard work fitting it all in. I chose full time study as well as part time work to just get it over and done with.

I’m in Scotland and got a part time fee grant, but I think it’s only Scotland that had that.

If you've studied before it should be able to be taken into account and cut your study time down.

I started in October part time with OU, I have 2 school age children (one with additional needs) and a young toddler at home and caring for disabled family member but so far I'm finding it manageable. I know that it will get harder and more intense as the years go on tho but I am enjoying it.

I have got the student loan, it makes sense to do that as you don't pay it back until you earn over a certain amount (£25k?) and then it's about £30 a month. You can also get a student card and get discount in lots of shops.

I started last year.

Depending on your subject you might get credit for your previous study.

I already had a degree but the amount of credit I could transfer was tiny so I didn't bother, I'm doing maths and you really need to do all the options.

I get a part time loan from student finance (I'm in England) because it is a STEM subject.

Don't think of yourself as good or bad at maths, everything is explained and you also have a tutor. There are also online spacces to discuss with other students.

My first unit last year covered the equivalent of GCSE and some A Level, there was a mix of students who were taking the unit as part of a non science degree so things like business.

We were even given strategies such as not taking one assessment and concentrating on another, obviously this impacted on your score but if it is a unit you just have to get through with a minimum it is a valid strategy.

Thank you for your replies everyone. I'm glad everyone has achieved what you set out to do :) I have sent off a credit transfer form to see if I am able to do less modules. I have to do a HND and then a degree as I am studying someone entirely different to what I did before.
