Suggestions of how to keep baby warm please?

8 month old DD is about to start at the childminders that older DC goes to. They play outside for most of the day when it’s not raining and also use a playroom in a converted garage so it’s not as warm as a house.

I’ve looked at snow suits etc but they tend to be quite padded making it hard for DD to learn to move about. It’s things like keeping her hands and feet warm that I am worried about.

Does anyone have any suggestions for good warm clothing for this age group.

could you get a padded coat, then some glove clips and clip a pair of mittens on? you could also get a pair of these that can go over her socks

I used to get kids ski clothes when ds was little - layer them up for when it’s very cold.

Greedytiger · 12/11/2019 17:59

Thanks. I’m struggling to find much in the way of base layers for her age range.

Polarn O Pyret used to have great merino base layers for that age. Have a look to see if they still do.

catchingzzzeds · 12/11/2019 18:02

Perhaps layers rather than a chunky snowsuit; tights, leggings and trousers, 2 pairs of socks and slipper type boots with a coat over the top?

sleepismysuperpower1 · 12/11/2019 18:07

polarn o pyret have a thermal all in one (linked)

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 12/11/2019 18:08

Tights are a good start with dungarees /salopettes to keep the draught out. Polo neck cotton top and thinish waterproof ski jacket. Decent socks and gloves too.

Greedytiger · 12/11/2019 18:36

Thanks will have a look at those.

I’m a real indoor person so just hate the thought of her being cold. Other DC is 3 so is always running around and doesn’t feel the cold at all so he is fine.

It’s all about the hat when trying to keep warm.
Layers are better than one big coat.
Gloves (if they stay on) are good too.

To be honest, I don't think the arrangement sounds suitable for an 8 month old. Babies can't regulate their temperature and lose heat very quickly. She won't be running about to keep warm. Assuming you're in the U.K. it doesn't sound ideal for her to be outside for most of the day.

www.muddypuddles.com/ are great for outdoor stuff that's properly waterproof but also flexible.

spiderlight · 12/11/2019 18:50

www.muddypuddles.com/thermals/ - thermals from 6-12 months

Next did fleece all in one zip ups when mine were little, I'll have a look see if they do them - we found them excellent!

AudTheDeepMinded · 12/11/2019 18:51

Try brand 'Name It', think it's Scandi, very good for warm and waterproof kids clothing.

Here. Can go over her normal outfit, but thin enough to wear under shoes if she has them and also thin enough for the carseat.

AudTheDeepMinded · 12/11/2019 18:52

and suggest layers, rather than padding?

redchocolatebutton · 12/11/2019 18:57

have a look at jakoo

go for long sleeved vests, tights, leggings, fleece overalls and thin rain suit.

I don't think I'd want my 8 mo playing in a garage through winter.

H&M do fleece onesies.

GrumpyHoonMain · 12/11/2019 19:31

Is the 8 mo mobile? If not they will probably spend most of their time indoors.

Toadsrevisited · 12/11/2019 19:34

Aldi have fleece onsies this week for £5

Greedytiger · 12/11/2019 20:24

No baby isn’t mobile yet.

The garage does have insulation and heating inside so it isn’t freezing, but the side door is usually open to allow access to the outdoor space for the older ones.

I trust my childminder to be sensible and to go into the house if it is too cold in the garage.
