I really hate getting out at this time of year. I leave home at 7am and it takes at least 10-15 mins for my car to heat up. I work in a hospital, so wear short sleeve dresses and cardigans, and a padded coat. And gloves when I have to scrape the car first.

What are you tips for a warm, comfortable journey to work? Or do I just have to suffer the first part of the journey?

Take a hot tea or coffee with you in one of those special cups
Hot water after bottle across your thighs and another in small of back

Luckily only 2 or 3 mornings a week but I leave for a 20 min walk to work at 5.30am.
I quite enjoy it, certainly wakes you up!
Think sitting waiting for the car to heat up is worse actually!

Bigpaintinglittlepainting · 12/11/2019 17:58

Ooh yes I feel your pain, I’m a gardener I have to leave the house at 7.30am, I wear a down jacket in the car and hat while I warm up with uggs Grin sexy !!!

Have you investigated getting a remote starter installed? Lots of vehicles here in northern Canada have them fitted. I can start my Volvo from their app.

HelenaJustina · 12/11/2019 18:13

I think I prefer walking on a cold morning than sitting in a car - at least you are moving and getting warm that way. I just freeze until my car warms up OP, I have a 3 mile commute (country lanes not safe to walk at that time of day) and I usually get to work before the car is warm!

HoldMyLobster · 12/11/2019 18:23

On a cold morning here I get in my car wearing a down jacket, scarf, ski gloves and fleece hat. Either snow boots or Uggs. I often put a fleece blanket over my legs too.

Tbf it was -13 here this morning.

It’s been cold in my area of Scotland since mid-October. Layers, layer up with a thermal vest underneath. Nice big blanket scarves are a godsend for me. I triple then up round my neck then wear them like a shawl in the office.

I hate playing the “will there be a frost game” every night to decide if to faff about with the swindscreen cover.
I hate waking up in the dark at 6am.
I hate leaving at 7 am but wasting 10 mins with the blowers because even though I didn’t need the cover the windscreen is misted because it’s freesing.
Hate the sun coming up at 7am to blind me the entire drive to work.

I also think back every morning to this evening” we hate summer threads”. The ones written in July , where I skipped out to warm sunshine at 7 am and came back to warm sunshine at 7pm. Bastards.

HappyHarlot · 12/11/2019 20:03

I have a Ford Focus so have a heated windscreen Grin

Irisloulou · 12/11/2019 20:07

Hot water bottle. Not just for bed😀

Second vote for a remote starter, where I live winter is very cold (-20)

GrotbagsBetterLookingSister · 12/11/2019 20:29

Remote starters are great for wherever it's really cold but are they necessary in most of the UK? Isn't that just adding to the pollution of the atmosphere?

Anyway, if you find that your windscreen takes a while to demist, would keeping some catsan stuff in a knotted up sock in the car absorb some of the water vapour?

I keep my hat & gloves on the radiator so they're warm when I put them on before leaving the house.

AreYouOkayHun · 13/11/2019 18:45

Thanks folks, just think I need to layer more clothing, and like the idea of gloves and hat on radiator.

I took a thermo mug of coffee today, but didn't feel entirely safe drinking whilst driving.

I don't like running the engine before I leave, but think about getting a heated seat cover.

Just a tip with the remote starter, make sure whoever is last in the car doesn't leave it in gear. Or car may drive off on you as your getting yourself ready in the house. This may or may not have happened to me Blush
