PCOS and metformin

I was diagnosed with PCOS when i was 21, im now 28. Ive been reading about PCOS and metformin keeps coming up. Is it as simple as asking your GP to put you on it?

I had a check up and scan at the hospital today as ive had irregular bleeding for the past 6 months ( been bleeding for 10-14 days a time and coming on every 3 weeks aswell ) and the hospital have said theres nothing in my womb causing it, cervix is fine and that it is a hormonal problem and contracpetion will stop the irregular bleeding

I cant have the pill as i get migraines but i dont want to be on any contraception. My partner and i have been trying for the past 6 months so i really dont want to go on contraception and have to wait even longer.

I know 6 months isnt long but it took me 2 years each time to have my ds and dd and i dont want to wait 2 years this time. I have a GP appointment tomorrow and ill tell them about the scan ect but can i ask for metformin or do i have to fit a certain criteria for it?

Im nearly 30 now and i really feel like time is running out for me to have more children

You could ask but as you have had children without metformin and your pcos is entirely hormonal (ie not visible on your ovaries) you may struggle to be put in front of a gaene to get the prescription. Inositol (ie in the form of inofolic or the form found in Pregnacare Max tablets) works in a similar way to metformin for mild pcos like yours.

I’ve been going to and from gynae consultants for 4 years and finally got prescribed last week: I had to have loads and loads of blood and hormone tests, mri and ultrasound scans to confirm before I could have it. GP couldn’t do anything but refer me to a consultant.

Hi sorry i didnt say when i was diagnosed at 21 i had an internal scan which showed black dots on one of my ovaries ( i cant think of the correct term for them now ) but they didnt mention them today which i was surprised about,

But on the basis that i have had 2 children without help do you think GP's and what not wont be interested in helping?

I am going to have a read about infocolic now, thank you

I was diagnosed with PCOS and referred, I hadn't had a period in over 2 years. I had 9 weeks of blood tests to see if I was ovulating, which I wasn't. because I was trying to conceive, they gave me metformin straight away. I fell pregnant within the first 2 months (very lucky). I did have gestational diabetes but apart from that I now have a very happy 5 month old DD Smile

I had to be referred to fertility but I was given metaformin on my first appointment with him and fell pregnant a few months later. I still take it now as it stabilises the symptoms associated with pcos

Listen to episode 8 of the podcast BFN, they have a PCOS specialist on and talk about metformin, Inositol and a wealth of other things!Flowers
