Has anyone signed up to the new scheme?

OP posts:
lovelyupnorth · 12/11/2019 06:37

It’s shit why would any one sign up.

footballmum · 12/11/2019 06:38

I was going to because I would save between £15 and £20 on the discount on the big shops. Glad I read the small print first though. It only applies to shopping in store, not online. Presume it’s an initiative to drive people into the stores but is no good for me as I do all of our shopping online.

IVEgotthesparklersBIATCH · 12/11/2019 06:39

Care to expand lovely?

Can't use it with colleague discount either.

IndianaMoleWoman · 12/11/2019 06:47

I won’t be signing up. I went to Tesco for the first time in ages this weekend and it was awful, really scruffy store, loads of basics missing, aisles blocked, absolutely massive store but no variety of products, but most annoying was their obscene pricing and ridiculous “offers”. Things normally £2 each are now £3.50 each but on “offer” at two for £4. If you only want one it’s tough shit.

Seems to me that this discount will probably work the same way - they’ll just add it on to the price for everyone else/every other Tesco shop you do. And it’s so inflexible - it should be a cash spend limited over as many shops you like over the month, say maximum value £200, rather than two shops. Not everyone has got the storage for massive shops, or the transport to carry them home.

lovelyupnorth · 12/11/2019 06:49

@IVEgotthesparklersBIATCH

You only save on two shops, you have to shop in store, really hard to earn any savings.

Unless you do two big shops in a month in store it’s just not worth it.

They’ll make more money from people signing up and not using it like most subscriptions people don’t use them to there full benefit.

JigsawsAreInPieces · 12/11/2019 06:54

We considered it.

£8 a month spend to receive up to £40 off a month over 2 shops of £200 each. On that alone it's good value for money BUT if you don't do large in store shops, only have a small family or prefer online shopping it's not so good.

Household of 2 here, we shop online and spend around £40/50 a week. We've decided it's not going to benefit us overall.

Martin Lewis on MSE has done a very good analysis of the pros and cons, worth a read.

happystory · 12/11/2019 06:59

It will be worth it for us as far as I can see. At least twice a month our shop would be £100 ish so that saves £20 a month for a fee of £8. And at Christmas our big shops shops be more

IVEgotthesparklersBIATCH · 12/11/2019 07:06

With the two 10% off shops does anyone know if it covers toys (not tescos ones)?

OP posts:
footballmum · 12/11/2019 07:32

No I don’t think it does IVE. Just groceries.

moobar · 12/11/2019 07:36

Oh glad I read this thread. I have not looked at it in any detail yet but shop online with the, as very rural. That's no good for me then.

IVEgotthesparklersBIATCH · 12/11/2019 07:43

Thats rubbish then football!

elf1985 · 12/11/2019 07:59

I thought it was supposed to work with colleague discount. Gas anyone tried?

TheQueef · 12/11/2019 10:57

We haven't tried Elf dc was told it would come off his colleague total and only staff or plus discount applies.
It needs confirmation.

MadisonAvenue · 12/11/2019 11:02

I was quite interested in this when I first read about it a few weeks ago, my son worked for Tesco up until the beginning of October and I was missing my family discount.

I do my big shops online though and just do a weekend top up in store so I wouldn't be saving anything.

Selfsettlingat3 · 12/11/2019 11:06

No. I do shop with Tesco but online.

CallarMorvern · 12/11/2019 11:12

Thank you for posting this, as I was thinking it looks a good deal. Tesco is our only local supermarket ( apart from M&S and tiny co-ops) and most of my food shop comes from there. But my main shops are online, so it would be useless for us, hadn't realised until I read the posts above. So thanks for saving me the time and effort reading their t&cs.

ColdRainAgain · 12/11/2019 11:19

I'm tempted by it.
We shop pretty exclusively at tesco, in store.
I think the prices in tesco have rocketed up in the past few weeks tho. I've been spending £80-85 a week, and the last 3 shops were over 100 (admittedly one was half term).
BUT what counts as groceries?? If it includes toothpaste, and kitchen cleaner and loo roll, we should be quids in. If it is literally food, possibly not.

BarbaraofSeville · 12/11/2019 11:29

You'd probably do better, if you had the stores nearby, to do some or all of your shopping in Aldi, Lidl, Morrisons or Asda, even if they were further away. Or buy toiletries and cleaning products in Wilko, Home Bargains or Savers.

If you spend more than £80 a month in Tesco and are organised to remember to use the app and not get confused by it going on the anniversary of when you signed up, not on calendar months, it might be worthwhile. Otherwise I wouldn't bother.

Or maybe they're trying to encourage online shoppers back in store, as what they charge for delivery probably doesn't cover the cost of providing the service.

Whitney168 · 12/11/2019 11:34

maybe they're trying to encourage online shoppers back in store

I think this must be a good part of it. I certainly find shopping online far cheaper than going in to the stores, as you see all manner of stuff that you just didn't know you needed.

If they are not even giving discount outside groceries - i.e. when people see and pick up extras like flowers, books, magazines, cookware, homewares - then I guess it could be very lucrative for them.

When I was going in to the store (and I haven't even done this for a good few years now), I found it hard to get out without spending over £100. Shopping online, I keep it between £60 and £80.

Natley87 · 12/11/2019 14:57

You can use it with the colleague discount. It explains how it work on ourtesco.com

Michaelbaubles · 12/11/2019 14:59

I was vaguely interested but I only do online shops - I know I could get some stuff cheaper elsewhere but I work full time and to be honest I want to click and forget. So if I’m going to go to the effort of shopping in store I’ll go somewhere cheaper in the first place like Lidl. It’s a total non-starter for me.

TheQueef · 12/11/2019 15:19

Thanks Nat I will check. My DC does work at the only Tesco not to sell milk and bread so it was likely rhubarb Grin

Dubb · 12/11/2019 17:30

Yeah you can .. can show you my receipt from Sunday .. and there is a poster in staff hall showing it works with colleague lol

IVEgotthesparklersBIATCH · 21/11/2019 08:10

Ok i signed up but probably cancel it after December, i know we will spend plenty in store between now and then

I see online they have 25% off clothing. Does anyone know if you still get the 10% off as well?
