Repeat year 9 or 10?

My 15 year old son has been without education since the end of April this year which was year nine for him.

His foster care placement broke down and he was moved two hours drive away from where he was registered in school. Socisl services were due to organise a home tutor for him but that's not happened despite frequent assurances it would.

Anyway, he's now coming back to live with me and we're just waiting for it to be signed off, which was due to happen a fortnight ago but hasn't. He's got a school place here and as soon as we get the go ahead he can start.

However, we know he's likely to be quite far behind. We dont know just how much, especially as he started a new school for yr9. So, DS has come to the conclusion that he might have to repeat a year, to which his social worker agrees.

I'd presume he'd be better off repeating yr9, that way he could catch up with what he's missed and then be able to choose his options for yr10 and then carry on into yr10. Would it work like that? I'm prepared to get him a tutor for English and especially Maths as he's never been particularly confident in that area.

I'd really appreciate any help or advice please.

Schools and local authorities are very reluctant to either advance or keep back pupils out of their academic year. But these are very unusual circumstances, so they might be more flexible.

He’s missed a term of Year 9 and a term of Year 10 then? It will also depend on GCSE options at the school he goes to and there may be limited availability.

Has a school place been allocated? One of the problems is that GCSE results only count in the correct academic year, so if your son were to repeat a year that would be an issue.

Have you been in touch with the LA, or any schools, depending on whether they’re academies.
