Tight, painful cracked lips - any recommended chapsticks / balms etc?

Normal chapstick not working , just 'pooling' on the skin.

Cannot smile as too painful!

Any recommendations? (or just go to the local pharmacy when it opens and get their advice?)

I use a dab of foot cream. It's insanely moisturising, works immediately and lasts all day.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 10/11/2019 09:34

Yes to Blistex it's the only thing that works.Cleared mine up in less that 24hrs

makingmiracles · 10/11/2019 09:35

BListex, around £3 a tube, tingles for about 60seconds then boom, lips feel fine, try it, you’ll never buy anything else!

Another vote for Lanisoh nipple cream. I had very sore cracked lips recently, Burts Bees/ normal lip balms were insufficient!

LadyPlasters · 10/11/2019 09:45

I use the little tubs of Vaseline every night but also as and when needed through the day. I also take vitamin B12 everyday, if I don't, then my lips get super sore and crack

pharmagal · 10/11/2019 09:46

Best stuff I've used is Bodyshop Hemp lip balm. It's excellent, although I don't particularly like the smell of it.

GinisLife · 10/11/2019 10:05

Why would anyone use Vaseline on their lips ? It's what it says - petroleum jelly. It's made from petrol. It's shit for you. The more you use the more you need - and it's a barrier not a moisturiser. Really, stop with the Vaseline 😩. Blisteeze, Carmex, Burts Bees, Aloe, any of these are better for it.

revelsandrose · 10/11/2019 10:12

La Roche posay cicaplast £7 from boots was recommended by a dermatologist to use when taking medication that dries the lips out, it's amazing.

TheGirlFromStoryville · 10/11/2019 10:13

Melrose stick from Amazon, about £4.

A GP friend recommended it, it's been going for years and years.
Best stuff ever!

pickleface · 10/11/2019 10:14

I also love blistex but over the last few nights, ive been slathering on some castor oil and its worked a treat!

MrsPellegrinoPetrichor · 10/11/2019 10:14

Blistex

wibdib · 10/11/2019 10:18

Don’t think of needing a single lip balm or cream - you need 2 different creams to do two different things.

First off you need to get moisture into your lips so use a water based cream rather than an oily or waxy one - if you have a face cream that is like a moisture surge or deeply hydrating, that would be great. If you don’t use them for your skin regularly, just get a small tube of face cream for very dry skin. You only need a couple of dots so if you can get a couple of sample tubes to get you started and find something you like.

Then once you’ve let the hydrating cream sink in, you need to put something on to protect and to stop the water from escaping. Lanisoh is the best thing ever for this - like many others I discovered it when breastfeeding - but my dc are now at senior school and I still buy it for my lips. It costs a tenner a tube but using it every day it lasts a couple of years. And once you’ve got your lips soft again a small dob of lanisoh before bed will keep them perfect all day.

I have the same problem and I’ve tried blistex, carmex, nuxe, vaseline, lanolips but none of them helped.

O’keefe lip repair is my holy grail!

Duckbill794 · 10/11/2019 10:28

None of it! Don’t spend another penny. I suffered this for months and spent an absolute fortune on everything suggested above.

My lips were so sore, I couldn’t smile or even open my mouth wide enough to eat properly some days. In desperation I made a doctors appointment (well actually a nurse practitioners appointment). She prescribed me fucidic acid and daktacort and within a week they’d cleared. The relief was immense.

Google angular chelitis- that’s what she suspected I had.

MoobaaMoobaa · 10/11/2019 10:29

Blistex

onetimeonlyy · 10/11/2019 10:34

I've got big lips and wear tons of Lipstick, I honestly find asral cream brilliant. Sounds gross but eventually the top bit of skin loosens and then you need to just moisturise them like mad

spatchcock · 10/11/2019 18:44

I’m 😯 at people putting Vaseline on their lips. I’m not in the UK - is it marketed there as a lip balm?

PeterRouseTheFleshofMankind · 10/11/2019 18:49

Burts Bees - only the original beeswax one though, the others are shit.

BuildBuildings · 10/11/2019 18:51

@spatchcock yep www.vaseline.co.uk/product/lip-therapy/original.html what do you do with it?

afternoonspray · 10/11/2019 18:56

The best one I've ever had is a Nivea honey one i bought in Japan. I've just lost it and really hope they sell it here. It's thick without being sticky and it absorbs quickly leaving the lips feeling supple. So many of the other ones burn or just slick on top of the skin. The Blistex cream is good if the skin around your mouth has got really dry but I don't find it does much for the actual mouth. Never got the thing with Carmex. It stings. It stains your skin bright red and doesn't work.

Just googled and found the Nivea

Stravapalava · 10/11/2019 18:57

This stuff is amazing!

Then maintain with the O'Keeffe's or Palmers lip balm.

KellyHall · 10/11/2019 18:58

Carmex. Apply especially loads just before bed, making sure your hair is tied back!

cathpinc · 10/11/2019 19:03

O'Keefes is the best - sorted out my sore, sore Invisalign dried-out lips in 12 hrs. It's the only lip balm that works on cracks and chapping for me. Much better ime than anything else, and I tried them all.

historysock · 10/11/2019 19:07

Ha! I've used Vaseline for years. Is it not the point if those little pots of it that it's to be used as lip balm?

Works fine for me or else Carmex.

historysock · 10/11/2019 19:08

If you can bear it a gentle brush over your lips with a damp toothbrush also helps-then apply your chosen product like mad!
