You actually turn the cooker on to heat up before putting the lovingly prepared chicken in

Any other tips? Grin

When cooking the Christmas turkey check the oven is on ‘oven ‘ not ‘grill’

SamBeckett · 09/11/2019 19:27

I am guilty of pouring stock down the sink lots of times
If you are going to use ice cream tubs to frezze left overs , mark the tubs. Melted ice cream and rice for tea anyone?

When making chicken pasta bake remember to put pasta in otherwise it’s just chicken bake.

It's also a good idea to put the prepared cheese on top of the lasagne rather than leave it on the plate beside the cooker.

And when cracking eggs, the shell goes in the compost/bin and the egg goes in the bowl or pan.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 09/11/2019 20:18

Don't put the Class Bear on top of the oven heat vent when pretending to be a proper mum by baking biscuits with DC.

BackforGood · 09/11/2019 20:21

My tip for the week is not to lift the lid off the steamer with bare fingers Sad

Jesusinthecabbagevan Shock oops!!

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 09/11/2019 21:23

Badger think the flames probably sterilized him, he was bogging

Grin DS brought one home from nursery and someone (possibly/probably/hopefully DS) has wiped their nose on the back of its head

nikkylou · 09/11/2019 22:39

That you put the jacket potatoes IN the oven rather than left on the side for 2 hours.

Whitney168 · 10/11/2019 14:12

When you have a tiny kitchen and so tend to use the back rings of the cooker for “storing” “pending” paperwork it’s best not to light the hobs directly under the “kindling”!

Or a cookbook. I've set fire to one particular book twice.

Lieinrequired · 10/11/2019 15:02

Put away ALL the shopping. Finding a pack of ham at the bottom of a shopping bag one week later is not pleasant.

Ice cream goes in the freezer, bowls in the cupboard...

captainpantbeard · 10/11/2019 15:23

Why not take the time to heat up your oven then turn it off as soon as you put the chicken in?

Or, instead of turning the oven on, put the grill on (also in oven) and put a whole chicken under the grill for half an hour...or until you smell burning

Graphista · 10/11/2019 16:05

“Or a cookbook. I've set fire to one particular book twice.“ yep done that too

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 10/11/2019 16:16

I made a coconut, rum and pineapple cake once and spent ages making the rum syrup, whisking the egg whites, grating fresh coconut etc. After I put it in the oven, I turned around and saw the fresh pineapple I'd so carefully prepared still sitting on the countertop. Bum.

TeaAndStrumpets · 10/11/2019 16:22

I melted a child's lunchbox once. It contained some mangled crusts and banana peel, so it saved me having to wash it Grin

TeaAndStrumpets · 10/11/2019 16:24

A food processor lid. They smell a bit nasty when they melt.

MintyMabel · 10/11/2019 16:29

Once spent an hour baking potatoes using only the heat from the oven light.

MartyrGuacamole · 10/11/2019 16:31

Dh has just decided at 4.30pm he wants a roast dinner, so has gone to the Co-op - last open shop for miles - to see what he can find. I'm reading these top tips avidly in preparation 😂

TeaAndStrumpets · 10/11/2019 16:43

That's very frugal, mabel!

SnugglySnerd · 10/11/2019 16:51

Check that you have set the microwave for 2 mins to cook scrambled eggs. Under no circumstances set it for 20 minutes by mistake and them wander off and forget all about it. Burnt scrambled eggs smell vile.

Candlebarbara · 10/11/2019 16:53

Chap in my halls at uni had never cooked anything in his life before starting.
First time he cooked pasta he didn’t realise you needed to drain it. He just tipped it, with all the water from the saucepan on to his plate, and wondered why the water went everywhere...

He also put a pizza in the oven complete with plastic wrapper.. that really stank!

SnugglySnerd · 10/11/2019 16:54

Also if you are going to make balsamic dressing and store it in an empty olive oil bottle label it. Vinegar doesn't respond well to being heated in a frying pan. We were actually cleaning it off the ceiling for weeks afterwards.

JigsawsAreInPieces · 10/11/2019 17:01

When you finely chopped garlic for the dish and after you've eaten it take the plates back to the kitchen and spot the garlic sitting quietly on the chopping board.

When you serve steak and vegetables, delicious meal and in the morning find the chips still sitting in the oven. How, I don't know. Confused

When you come back from a quick loo break only to see the saucepan that you left the carefully made jus in to cool is now clean and on the draining board, with your spouse looking pleased as punch because he found a job to do to help without being told.

elephantoverthehill · 10/11/2019 17:15

When you get up at 6 o'clock to put the Christmas goose in the oven and you have invited your extended family around, check that gas is getting to the oven rather than wafting in when it felt like rather than wafting into the garden through a hole in the gas pipe.
