How much food do you have at home?

From reading some other threads, I am surprised that so many need to go to the shops at the last minute to be able to eat next meal. People talk about child being ill, food order cancelled, them with flu etc and then being left down to nothing.

Not including if that is because you are down to last pennies so it has to be that way, do many of you really have to rush out in whatever circumstances to get something for next meal?

I always have a stock in due to rural location and weather, but even before would have some simple pasta, beans on toast type thing we could rustle up for a few days if we couldn't get out to the shops for whatever reason.

joffreyscoffees · 08/11/2019 17:09

Not a lot, we're rubbish at shopping and run out of food all the time, doesn't really bother me.

IHaveBrilloHair · 08/11/2019 17:13

Far too much probably, but I was very poor when Dd was little and I can't stand seeing empty cupboards or worrying there won't be enough.
Being poor has a huge impact I think.

LucaFritz · 08/11/2019 17:15

I always keep a good supply of canned foods rice packets and things in case there's an unexpected bill and i have to cut back on the food bill that month. I think everyone should have a few cans and packets lying around to make emergency meals at short notice

MustardScreams · 08/11/2019 17:22

If I’m ill and there’s nothing in we have same day delivery for Tesco and sainsbos, or can Deliveroo a decent selection from CoOp in 30 minutes.

I’d be stuffed if I was ill with no internet though!

ArthurtheCatsHumanSlave · 08/11/2019 17:23

I seem to be in a minority, but my cupboards are never full as I don't really eat much in the way of tinned or packet food. I always have a couple of tins of tomatoes and a bag of rice and pasta, but I mostly eat fresh pasta, so that is for emergencies only. I shop once a week, and we always run out before the next shop, so I usually have to pop to the next village.

We are quite rural, about 6 miles to the nearest supermarket, but I don't see that as a problem, as I get most food delivered. At about 6 miles we have a medium co-op, a little Waitrose at a Shell station, and a couple of farm shops.

GenuineKlatchianPottery · 08/11/2019 17:27

We get an online shop every fortnight. We’ve got enough food to last at least 3 weeks of decent meals followed by another 2 weeks of basic. Also at least 6 weeks of coffee, dilute juice, toiletries and laundry products.
Like others I have memories of growing up with no food in the house and only having one small evening meal a day. I still remember the embarrassment of sitting with friends while they ate in school and having to go to the bathroom for a drink of water. Even now at 53 I am more likely to only eat one meal a day, I rarely eat breakfast although the last couple of years I do often graze on and off throughout the day Blush

CountFosco · 08/11/2019 17:27

I grew up very rurally on a farm so we always had lots of food in the house, it was 20 miles to the supermarket and 5 to the nearest corner shop. But since we were on a farm we had a chest freezer full of meat and plenty of potatoes and veg in the fields/in storage. We were once snowed in for a week.

I still have the 'needs lots of food in the house' mentality, have enough for a few weeks in the house, lots of tinned and frozen veg and fruit and storecupboard stuff. MIL is amazed by how much food I have in the house.

Homemadearmy · 08/11/2019 17:37

We tend to live week to week. We could most probably survive a 4/5 days with what's left in the cupboards and freezer. But not comfortably. I do try and build up a store cupboard, but it never seems to work.

WorraLiberty · 08/11/2019 18:02

ArthurtheCatsHumanSlave you're not in a minority.

You have tinned tomatoes, rice and pasta like lots of people do.

The OP is talking about the amount of MNetters who say they have literally nothing at all in their cupboards, fridges and freezers.

Unless poverty is involved (and it really isn't always), I don't understand why so many MNetters allow themselves to run completely out of food, so they can't feed their children if the online shop goes wrong, or their DH forgets to pick something up on the way home.

slipperywhensparticus · 08/11/2019 18:03

Far too much I hoard food

I'm poor far too often

JustaScratch · 08/11/2019 18:14

I've almost always got some rice, pasta, tinned veg type stuff in the cupboard and a few bits in the freezer, but often in a situation where there's not a lot that would make a tasty meal, although it would get us out of a hole in a crisis. We're a bit low at the moment as we've been a bit short on cash lately so have gone through some of the store cupboard supplies. I can totally see how it happens, even if you're not really hard up, plus a lot of people don't have much storage space.

Babdoc · 08/11/2019 18:27

I’m in a village, 10 miles from the nearest supermarket. I plan my meals and shop once a week. I keep good stores of frozen, dried and tinned goods.
I only once had a problem when the village was completely cut off by snow and the dairy farmers couldn’t get their milk to market as the tankers couldn’t reach the snowbound farms to collect it. So we had no milk or bread delivery for a week. Fortunately I’d stocked up, and was just down to my last quarter pint of milk when the snowplough finally got through.

SimonJT · 08/11/2019 18:50

I generally buy what we’re having for dinner on the way home (apart from seasoning and rice), I make enough so it’s also lunch for the next day.

I grew up without a fridge (or kitchen), so buying fresh food and not eating it that day is still an alien concept.

Oblomov19 · 08/11/2019 19:01

A lot. Lots in the freezer and staples like rice, pasta, tins of tomatoes, coconut milk etc.

When I use one, it Goes on the shopping list to be replaced, so I always have the same items in my cupboard.

I'm literally astonished that everyone doesn't have these basic items : apart from those who are on low incomes and can't afford it.

lljkk · 08/11/2019 20:50

We have lots of food. And lots of clothes.

I am sure many of the 'I have no food in the house' posters just don't fancy the food in their house.

Because you're always burning thru food I rather understand running out of that; and at least there should be no waste if there's only 2 meals worth in the building at any one time.

It's the folk who say they literally have 3 outfits to wear and nothing else that boggle my mind. I spend very little on clothes, maybe £30/year, yet I have tonnes of clothes.

MrsGrindah · 08/11/2019 20:55

This thread is making me sad realising how many people grew up hungry

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 08/11/2019 21:25

we'd manage a pretty extended apocalypse here

plenty of dry good for baking, lots of HM jams, fridge is rarely less than full, plenty of tinned stuff in the cupboards, and noodles/pasta/rice/lentils/beans also
giant freezer too, I am always buying stuff in the reduced, so just now there's two chickens, a shoulder and leg of pork and a shoulder of lamb, a few ready meals for ds if we are away or dh for work (shop and home made)
lots of frozen veg and fruit in there as well.

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 09/11/2019 08:47

We are a large family in a small house. DH grew up without enough food in the house and genuinely believes there will be a zombie apocalypse, and I believe there will be food price increases post Brexit. We also have a Costco membership. You can imagine!

I am more likely to be killed by falling over a fucking huge multi pack of toilet paper rolls (currently under the kitchen table so everyone bangs their feet on it) or a pallet of baked beans falling on my head, than I am to starve in any circumstances.

On the plus side we could probably survive for months and have enough toilet roll in the event of apocalyptic happenings!

DamnitCharlie · 09/11/2019 09:01

I'm struggling to to do a big shop (heavily pregnant) so just ordered a big online shop for when my boyfriend is here to unpack. I'm sick of having half packets of pasta and rice so using them up. I also just cannot afford to stock up at the moment, we've just done a lot of meal prep for when the baby comes which was expensive hence using all the food that will go off soon. Will stock up before new baby, Christmas and Brexit though and find the money from our savings.
