Hello lovely mumsnetters

Some of you may remember me from my breakdown a few weeks ago Blush

DD and I are getting back on our feet now finally and have all of you guys to thank for the advice and handholds! However iv recently realised now that I'm paying attention to how much things cost and have a couple £ here and there to get food how much does fruit and veg cost!!

Luckily for me my DD would rather have fruit than chocolate/sweets but why does fruit cost so much more than sweets?apples which she will happily eat 6 of a day are £2 a pack (not a lot but for me that's normally all the money I have).

I don't understand how in this day and age the healthy things are so expensive compared to unhealthy?everyone goes on about childhood obesity but I feel like I'm fighting a losing battle when 9 times out 10 it would be easier to give DD a mini pizza than an apple 😭

Surely there must be a scheme or help or something to feed our kids healthy?I don't get it 🤦‍♀️

6 apples a day?

That seems a lot, can't you cut that down? Where do you shop, you can apples cheaper than that at all the supermarkets near me, if she has to eat so many you could save 50p a day which would help

mamasma · 08/11/2019 10:22

That's my mistake she doesn't actually eat 6 a day but would if I let her!!i live very rurally so the only thing close to me (I didn't drive) is a express shop.

Lidl and Tesco at least sell their cheap apples for about 75p for 6. You'll have to pay more if you want a particular variety though.

Ah, cross posted. Yeah, it's a common issue with small shops in rural areas I think.

DryHeaving · 08/11/2019 10:27

I agree with you. Massed produced food is cheaper as it doesn't rely on weather / harvests

mamasma · 08/11/2019 10:28

It's so frustrating,i just feel like should healthy fruit veg etc not be cheaper than crisps, sweets, pizzas?

In my shop you can get a pizza for 50p!but oranges, apples, grapes,l etc etc £2-£3.

Do any supermarkets deliver in your area? Get a midweek delivery pass which is cheaper and after a few shops you'll have a list to pick from and you can filter by whats on offer to make it cheaper.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 08/11/2019 10:32

Apples are one fruit you expect to be cheap.

Junk food is often cheaper than healthy stuff. And keeps fresh longer.

mamasma · 08/11/2019 10:35

You can get deliveries but because of my current circumstances I'm only just getting my first pay next week so right now I'm using a couple of pounds here and there to keep us going but next week when I get paid I can finally order a decent shop with thousands of apples Grin

Try home delivery op. It's a lot cheaper. I shop at Asda and a bag of bananas and apples cost about 90p each

charactersonclothesaretrashy · 08/11/2019 12:45

It is tough shopping on a budget op. Especially with Christmas just around the corner too.

mamasma · 08/11/2019 14:07

When I was younger I was really over weight and I really don't want my DD to go the same way but I feel like I'm fighting a losing battle!

I get growers need to make profit and all that but You could easily go to a shop and buy a frozen range to feed you for 2 days for £3 but try and make a healthy meal...to last with £3 it is nigh on impossible unless your eating lentils everyday (I've tried)

mamasma · 08/11/2019 14:09

I've tried the online shop and will be able to do that next week but the minimum amount you can order is £25 and I don't have that at the minute.

A lot of fruit is expensive because it isn't grown here. It is either tropical or out of season in the UK, so it is grown elsewhere in the world and shipped over here in refrigerated containers, and the perishable stuff comes by air.

So it's quite obvious why it costs so much.

charactersonclothesaretrashy · 08/11/2019 23:01

I usually just buy frozen veg in winter. In summer fresh veg is usually cheaper.
Can you invest in a cheap slow cooker op? It will help to cut down on your electricity bills and it is lovely to come home to a hot meal.

ActualHornist · 09/11/2019 00:09

Fruit is the one thing that I don’t buy ‘because you’ll just eat it’ Grin. My youngest would easily eat his way through a net of oranges, a punnet of grapes and a punnet of strawberries. He rarely has sweets but the dentist told him off for eating too much citrus!

Motoko · 09/11/2019 02:13

It's a bit late in the season now, but during September and October, there are loads of wild apple trees growing in random places. One spot near me, had 2 different varieties of apples, sloe trees, blackberries, plus a couple of different plum trees. It was a favourite foraging spot for me and my husband. I either froze the fruit, or made jams and chutneys. They quite often grow, when people chuck away their apple cores, or fruit stones, when they're out.

Foraging is also a fun activity to do as a family. When I was a kid, the whole family, as well as my nan, aunts, uncles and cousins, would all go out blackberrying in August. Something to consider next year perhaps.

It's a shame you don't have an Aldi near you. They have their "Super 6", fruit and veg at really low prices, like 69p for a bag of mini apples etc, and the offers change every 3 weeks. The current offer has leeks, easy peelers citrus, brussel sprouts, salad potatoes, unwaxed lemons, and organic onions, all for 65p. Lidl also have offers on fruit and veg, like Aldi.
