Hi All,
My darling Dad starts radiotherapy in a couple of weeks and will be receiving treatment over Christmas, New Year and his birthday, while staying at the nearby cancer support accommodation.
I am planning to put together a gift - a collection of items to help him get through his treatment - and was hoping for some suggestions from those of you who have been through radiotherapy and/or have stayed away from home during treatment.
I thought about a reusable water bottle as I know he’ll have to drink lots of water before and after his treatment. Any other suggestions would be gratefully received! He has a very good sense of humour so tongue-in-cheek, joke items are welcome as well as thoughtful, practical things.
Thank you in advance x

I can’t offer any real advice but if he does have a good sense of humour, perhaps a Geiger counter

FelicityBeedle · 07/11/2019 23:50

Or cheaper is a dosimeter

Things to read / do, as there is SO much sitting around.

What body part is being irradiated? Is he staying in as he's radioactive, or due to distance?

I was very tired.
My best 'gift' was actually a loan - my friend came round with a big pile of DVDs which she said I could borrow for as long as I wanted. It was great as a lot of time was spent just lazing, watching stuff on the TV that didn't need me to concentrate greatly.
I'm guessing now it might be that something like a Netflix subscription might work better ??

Then magazines and puzzle books were better than novels - again, the concentration and tiredness thing.

It depends which part of his body really?
My dad has just finished 6 weeks of radiotherapy on his throat. Up until week 5 he was brilliant. Then he got really tired and felt the cold .
Also started losing weight .
Can’t think of anything gift wise other than warm socks , scarf

Cream like aveeno or moo goo. A silk pillowcase. Protein powder to add the drinks. Puzzles, music, sudoku, novels, magazines, something to occupy him. Kindles are cheap enough and loaded with the kind of stuff he likes (games, patience, solitaire, hay day, candy crush, word games, blackjack, newspapers, magazines,) interesting squashes or soft drinks, soft socks. Fluffy socks, a fluffy pillow, straws, chocolate stash.

Sorry, it’s his prostate, forgot to say.
He’s staying in the accommodation due to distance.

God I was so tired too. I assume the place has WiFi - if so, maybe tv subscription kike Netflix as pp said. And maybe video call him often. He will be Bored.

Is it catered? Ford was an issue, as I was hungry but too tired to cook and wash up. And that'd be worse if i wasn't at home. So a solution to that may be to save him from eating crisps and twixes.

I found aloe vera gel really good for the burnt bits, but his radio nurse may have more suitable ideas. Skin can get crazy sensitive.

Food was an issue, not ford!
