Hangover-free New Year's Day

What does everyone do on new years day?
We always used to spend it hungover and recovering but these days we have little kids we stay at home with so are fresh as daisies on NYD.
I want to take advantage of this and spend the first day of 2020 doing something nice.
So yes I know lots of you will be hanging and lots of you will be working but everyone else - what are your traditions or usual plans?

I’ve gone past the stage of wanting to go out NYE. Happy at home with a takeaway and wine and a roaring fire.

Then the following morning i go for a long run, thanking the world for another year and make the most of a new fresh day.

Its overrated!

My Dad and his Scouting friends have been going on a walk on New Year’s Day for over 40 years. Now they are joined by all their children and grandchildren, sometimes as many as 50 people. One of them sets the route and it is a surprise for all the attendees but suitable for everyone!

We spend the day chatting, walking, exchanging Christmas tales, laughing at anyone with a sore head, playing iSpy and chase with the kids and dogs. There is a no phones rule and we book into a local pub for a slap up lunch. It’s one of my favourite parts of the holiday season and I know that I shall go for a New Year’s Day Walk as long as I am able!

BackforGood · 07/11/2019 23:44

Like User - NYD is traditionally a walk day

Scbchl · 07/11/2019 23:48

I have had lots of hangover free NY days. We tend to go a big walk along the beach with the dog and kids then go home have a big steak pie and then play board games with the Kids then watch a film.

avamiah · 07/11/2019 23:50

I personally can’t stand NYE.

SavageBeauty73 · 08/11/2019 00:01

Dog walk with my parents. Teenagers are more than likely to be in bed.

I can be a party animal but I never go out on NYE.

Amys136 · 08/11/2019 02:38

Last year was my first hangover free NYD since my teens. I went to Tesco’s and it was so quiet I’ll probably do the same this year

TheNestedIf · 08/11/2019 03:42

If you're near London, I can recommend Kew's Christmas Lights Trail. Or, anywhere by the National Trust will have something seasonal on.

Other than that, we just tend to play board games or cards, cook something nice, watch rubbish films and earn ourselves another hangover (I do make a point of booking 2nd January off too).

Aquamarine1029 · 08/11/2019 04:11

Having a hangover on New Year's Day is a choice. You choose to drink like an idiot. What a miserable way to start a new year and I have never done that. Stay home NYE and enjoy your family and home.

ILiveInSalemsLot · 08/11/2019 04:24

We go for a walk too. The kids are usually a bit tired and irritable as we often have family over and everyone stays up.
A walk does everyone a world of good. Then it’s a lazy afternoon playing a board game and watching films.

billandbenflowerpotmen1 · 08/11/2019 04:24

I enjoy a drink quite often. However I don't like NYE and never celebrate, just go to bed early. On NY day I always get up early and open all the windows then give the house a thorough clean. I've done this for as long as I can remember, it feels cathartic and a new start

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 08/11/2019 05:23

This year was the first New Year's Day I haven't been hungover for years. It was super boring! I went for a three hour run to kill the time. There's not much to do, all my friends were hungover so not out and about, everything was shut and I felt a bit fed up.

Toomanycats99 · 08/11/2019 05:49

We take part in the London New Year's Day parade! Lots of people are out watching that!

smemorata · 08/11/2019 05:52

We go to the seaside for a long walk and a fish lunch with friends.

doctorboo · 08/11/2019 06:19

My three are 4, 6 and 8 years old. We usually do a walk in the local woods and drive to see family.
This year we’ve booked tickets for us and my parents to go to the Wisley Glow event. Our entry time is 4pm so we’ll probably have a quiet day leading up to that.
If Wisley goes well as a NYD thing (we usually go beginning of Dec) It’ll the new NYD tradition.

Ithinkwerealonenowtiffany · 08/11/2019 07:07

Life and soul of the part @Aquamarine1029!

PuddleglumtheMarshWiggle · 08/11/2019 08:42

Outdoor swim at Hampton Lido (it's heated!) Followed by a bacon sandwich and hot chocolate. Then a walk in Bushey Park. Home for a good dinner and a film.
