Would you report this?

I was walking home from school pick up when a car reversed into the curb and brushed me, the driver then moved forward, looked at me, laughed and drove off. The driver was the only person in the car. I am not sure if they realised that the car touched me.

I am not hurt but it is a road that a junior school is on and full of school children at drop off and pick up times.

I'm not sure whether to report it to 101/online or not as I'm not hurt but they did reverse without looking and could have hit/touched a child.

Would you report this? I took a picture of the car as it drove away.

Yes if you have the reg number ....

Kaddm · 07/11/2019 16:56

If the car mounted kerb then the police will speak with the driver.

RainbowSparkles · 07/11/2019 17:31

I have got the registration number.
They didn’t mount the kerb just hit it and bounced forward.
This is why I don’t know if I should report it or not.

OP posts:
obviously · 07/11/2019 17:34

No I wouldn't report it. Presumably they hit the kerb by accident and they don't sit in the street driving back and forward at the kerb every day.

Seriously Confused

RainbowSparkles · 07/11/2019 18:48

@obviously Do you reverse without looking? Hitting a kerb, whilst pedestrians are on the path near you, during a driving test, can cause you to fail.

OP posts:
obviously · 07/11/2019 18:50

Yes I know it's a fail on a test. That's not really relevant. People hit the kerb. It happens. I have done it. I'm stunned you would consider reporting it. Move on..

RainbowSparkles · 07/11/2019 19:08

@obviously They hit a pedestrian, not very hard but they still hit a pedestrian. They then drove off, which is a criminal offence. This is why I am considering reporting it.
If they had been looking whilst reversing they would have seen me and my DC walking on the pavement, what if they had hit one of my DC would you still be saying don't report it?

OP posts:
Pinktop · 07/11/2019 19:14

I can imagine the police have better things to do than deal with accidents and near misses

obviously · 07/11/2019 19:17

@RainbowSparkles

Your thread title is 'would you report this'

My answer is no.

Why are you arguing about it? Report it if you want.

obviously · 07/11/2019 19:18

what if they had hit one of my DC would you still be saying don't report it?

The car was ON THE ROAD

The pedestrians were ON THE PAVEMENT

You are acting as if the car mounted the pavement and knocked you down.

ScreamingCosArgosHaveNoRavens · 07/11/2019 19:22

I'd be tempted to just because he'd laughed at me - bloody rude. If he hadn't laughed, I wouldn't.

Passthecherrycoke · 07/11/2019 19:23

I can’t really understand how a moving car can just touch someone tbh. But no the police won’t be concerned with a near miss so I wouldn’t report

Hurdygurdy24 · 07/11/2019 19:27

Really?

Did you not see the car moving and we’re it’s reversing lights not on?

Someone made a small mistake, it’s also the responsibility (probably not legally, but let’s assume some common sense here) of a pedestrian to give a bit of space to a vehicle that is manoeuvreing

WorraLiberty · 07/11/2019 19:27

The police won't want to know unless the car is stolen or something.

Did you make it clear to the driver that the car had made contact with you?

ChibiTotoro · 07/11/2019 19:28

No I wouldn't report it. You're not hurt, the car didn't mount the pavement and you say yourself you're not even sure they realised they made contact with you - I'm presuming with their wing mirror? The driver might have been laughing because they were embarrassed that you saw their crap driving. The most that will happen is that the call handler creates a CAD, no action will occur as a result of this so I'd save yourself the bother of waiting in a queue for 101 or filling out an online report.

LoyaltyBonus · 07/11/2019 19:28

Report it if you want to but nothing will happen. No one will even contact the driver

ScreamingCosArgosHaveNoRavens · 07/11/2019 19:30

I'm not saying this applies to the OP, but it amazes me that drivers always assume pedestrians will know what their cars' various flashing lights are supposed to signify.

I would have thought most parent taught their kids at a very early age to look out for reversing lights when passing driveways, walking in a car park etc.

They are the white ones on the back of a car (rather than red) that warm people nearby that the vehicle is in reverse gear and that as a person nearby you should use some common sense and give a bit of distance.

lljkk · 07/11/2019 19:37

I don't understand having the energy to want the hassle of trying to take this to ... police? Someone. You've reported here OP.

RainbowSparkles · 07/11/2019 19:38

@obviously Your thread title is would you report this My answer is no Your answer was more than that, it was sarcastic with an eye roll so not really an opinion I was going to take seriously. Thank you for replying though.

@Pinktop that's what I concluded so had decided not to report it.

Why would you assume the parents would know, though? Not everyone chooses to drive a car. If you're a driver, you should start from the point that pedestrians - who are entitled to walk the streets without passing a test - might know absolutely nothing. They might be partially-sighted, colour-blind, have learning disabilities - anything, really. If you choose to take control of a potentially lethal machine, you can't rely on people who haven't necessarily made that choice to do your thinking for you.

obviously · 07/11/2019 19:41

Just as the police wouldn't take you seriously.

My reply was sarcastic because I am gobsmacked that anyone would give headspace to this let alone consider reporting it to the police.

Think very carefully. Someone accidentally hit the kerb. They didn't go into the pavement, they are not serial kerb hitters (that you know of) and there is no crime committed or risk to the public. Now, do you really want to report it?

RainbowSparkles · 07/11/2019 19:44

@WorraLiberty yes I did but they laughed and drove off.

Thank you for all responses.

I'm not reporting it, I wasn't hurt

Correct, and of course in an ideal world no driver would ever make a small error of judgement.

Those of us who are able bodied and not visually impaired are fortunate enough to be able to further minimise the risk of being hit by being alert to what is going on around us. Blind people would no doubt hear the vehicle moving and react accordingly.

I taught my kids to assume everyone in a vehicle was an idiot until they prove otherwise. It’s just not sensible to assume no one is ever going to make a mistake.

If you are walking along a pavement and a vehicle is doing a manoeuvre on the road right next to where you are walking you just stop for a second and let them do their thing or move to the furthest from the road side of the pavement.

RainbowSparkles · 07/11/2019 19:47

@WorraLiberty that should say I tried to tell them
