Which films do you see a bit differently now you're older/debatably wiser?

I'm watching Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again for the first time yes, I deserve your judgement. I've just seen Donna jump into the arms of a random guy in Paris without too much concern. However, I was actively taken aback at her jumping onto a boat with another random and sailing off into the big empty sea whilst merrily flirting with said random. I couldn't help but think "Are you mad, woman? You're on your own out of earshot of everyone with a man who could easily overpower you". It's slightly spoilt the movie for me tbh Confused I'm sure I would have accepted it at face value 10 years ago!

Any movies that strike you a bit differently as you progress through time?

The Graduate, have loved it for years. Watched it recently and realised he's a stalker by the end 😱

Gone with the Wind

Sigh.

mousie Melanie a much better person than Scarlett.

Ashley is a wimp who should have sent Scarlett packing and treasured his wife.

Brett wasn't really all that.

Dirty Dancing
He was, effectively a pervert

And had really bad trousers and heeled shoes!

Big.

Rewatched as an adult and it's grim.

Pretty Woman. It’s a movie about a soulless corporate raider who buys a prostitute who turns Manic Pixie Dream Girl tricks for $5000 a week, including giving him a blowjob while cutely watching reruns of I Love Lucy.

Shirley Valentine. But actually because I’ve now read the play. And I’m the same age as her. I loved it when I was 16 but now it totally resonates. I urge you to all watch it again. Regain your lost identity!

Titanic - once the idealism of youth was past I realised Rose was better off with Cal who was filthy rich and drop dead gorgeous.

Wizard of Oz - if someone killed my sister and pinched her shoes that were rightfully mine to inherit as her next of kin, I’d be pretty angry too.

Mrs Doubtfire - when the kids freak out about a woman having male genitals and they’re worried their dad might actually enjoy dressing like that. And when the woman is uncomfortable about being chatted up by a man presenting as female, and the old lady is freaked out to see a man in the ladies loo, etc. People would be up in arms about it nowadays!

Madness it really is, isn't it. The whole girlfriend thing is actually quite yuk.

ContessaLovesTheSunshine · 06/11/2019 22:23

Oh God yes, Mrs Doubtfire Shock

I've never seen it, but I imagine Shallow Hal is even more unwatchable now than it was when released.... and White Chicks.
