Dd 15 frequent fainting and heart beat increases on Apple Watch

Do I need to be worried?

She has fainted 3 times at school and says she keeps getting heart rate increases on her Apple Watch 210 or something.

I’m not medical. Normal?

I would take her to GP to get cause of fainting evaluated. It can just be anxiety (sometimes hyperventilation) but can have medical causes like low blood pressure, blood sugar etc which blood tests can help pinpoint.

PurpleWithRed · 06/11/2019 20:29

Definitely GP, but can you ask her to record when her heart rate increases and how long it takes to go back, if she can do that without becoming obsessed.

Wildorchidz · 06/11/2019 20:35

I’d take the Apple Watch away.

V1daw1inter · 06/11/2019 20:38

Why?

Google orthostatic hypotension. I have it, and my heart rate will do that too.

childbenefitQs · 06/11/2019 20:46

Sounds like me as a teenager, although I'm not sure what my heart rate was but it just felt like fast, strong, sudden palpitations. I had lots of tests done which found nothing, but it went away when I was treated for a B12 deficiency which I later found out could be related.

PrettyPurse · 06/11/2019 20:47

Also look at cardioneurogenic syncope

GymSloth · 06/11/2019 20:49

Has she lost weight recently /does she eat 'normally '?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 06/11/2019 20:50

Another one with orthostatic hypotension.

Things worth a try:
B12 and iron blood tests
Lots of water during the day
Increasing the amount of salt in her diet
Avoiding sitting or standing for long periods - fidget, walk around when possible

And I agree about the watch. It's easy to become obsessive about multiple readings and it's not generally helpful.

Greybeardy · 06/11/2019 20:58

Take her to a GP and get proper medical advice rather than a random selection of internet diagnoses! Heart rates from watches are often not that accurate, but if it’s recoded a HR over 200 on each occasion she’s fainted and at no other time then that’s probably significant. Even if it’s not recording accurately she probably needs to see someone anyway.

HaveIgoneMad · 06/11/2019 21:01

Definatley get her a gp appointment, a pulse rate of 210bpm is extremely high even if she was exercising, it is not sustainable and could indicate a serious medical problem.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 06/11/2019 21:03

Yes - sorry. Definitely get her to the GP. It's quite common in teenage girls - they don't drink enough at school, and some don't eat properly at school either. And classrooms can be horribly hot, which doesn't help.
